Help with CDX2 please

Morning everyone,

I don’t post much but read with interest others thoughts .

I have a problem and would appreciate some thoughts / guidance.

My system is
Rega P6
CDX2
Nac 282
Nap 250DR
XPS DR
NAPSC
Wilson Benesch Arcs.

All been working well.and very happy with SQ ( might upgrade the TT and speakers but no urgency).

Been mostly playing vinyl but yesterday played a CD for the first time in a month and no sound at all on the right channel although the left channel sounded perfect.

Switched to vinyl and everything sounded wonderful on both channels.

Tried CD again and no right channel.

So I’m guessing that it must be the CD player.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be and whether the CDX2 is likely to be repairable?

Thanks in anticipation
Nick

Back to Naim asap while they still have parts, possibly the channel DAC.

ATB and Good Luck,

Morning Nick,

As @Osiris says, back to Naim. Just in case you are wondering how to do that, you box your CDX2 up and take it to your Naim dealer. You tell them what’s wrong. They do the rest. They phone you when it returns.

Hope it works out.

It’s a great player in what I imagine is a very nice system.

Best,
C.

Make sure you put the restraining screw in to prevent damage during transport.

Also, have you tried plugging the CDX2 into another input on the 282 ? You can use DIN or Phono. Also, possibly one of the Aux ports ?

Might help to narrow things down a bit.

Bear in mind that there is some configuration required on the 282 (if I recall correctly) to switch CD between DIN and Phono. Without it, you won’t get anything at all from the non-configured CD input. Details are in the manual.

As an ex CDX2 owner. Starting point would be to try RCA on the same input and then switch to other inputs. I’d also swap cables and see if the same issue arises on that or other inputs. I had this issue once and it was the pre not the CDP. I know another Naim CDP owner (not a CDX2) and for them it was the cable. Very unlikely to be the CDP itself.

As others above have advised. Try a different input (make sure it’s enabled) and if you have another DIN5 interconnect then swap that in as well.

If you try the RCA phonos (remember they will need to be enabled - Press + hold DISP then toggle between O DIN, oo RCA, or O oo DIN & RCA) do they output both channels?

Thanks for all your very helpful replies.

I don’t have another interconnect but I could borrow one from my dealer ( although some distance away )

If I plug the CD player into phono ( aux 2 ) on the 282 will that automatically be enabled as it is what I’m using now?

Ok I plugged the interconnect into tuner and exactly the same problem, still nothing on right channel but left is fine.

So, I guess it is either a defective interconnect or CD player ?

Tends to suggest that. Can you try a different interconnect?

Sending off CD players to Naim isn’t recommended (by Naim) unless there’s absolutely no other option. I’d therefore strongly recommend making sure it really is the player and not the interconnect.

None of us would want you to receive your CDX2 back damaged in transit, only to find it was a dodgy cable causing the problem!

I’m pleased if Naim again is able to support their good older CD players.

I flogged my Naim players long ago, in fear of having them being future door stops.
Its difficult to find alternatives as they were excellent performing.

Re: fixing. I visited the factory for a day about a month ago and came away with the impression that, like Ange Postecoglou’s football team, Naim will ‘always give it a go.’

Probably especially so, since the Nick has one channel still working. Let’s travel hopefully.

Yes. Dealer is going to let me borrow one to try.

Excellent news.

Thought I’d update you guys as you’ve been so helpful.

Tried playing vinyl tonight and that only played on one channel too. Bloody hell I thought amps have a problem.

So turned everything off and had a poke around only to find that the black speaker cable had come out of the plug and needs re soldering .

It must just have been an intermittent fault / loose connection that just happened not to work on CD.

Anyway happy days as nothing had to go back for repairs.

Think I will use this as a god sent opportunity to upgrade the speaker cable .

Thanks everyone.

How do you power the NAC 282?

What is your current cable and what are you thinking of upgrading to?

DG…

With a HICAP.

Very good question and so long ago that I bought it that I can’t fully remember except that it was an Odyssey cable but which one I have no idea.

At the time I had a demo of the Naim.cable and preferred the Odyssey but it wasn’t one of their top end models
