Here we go its vinyl time

I hope to read your impressions tomorrow so. I feel you will have big difficulties to return it back after the listening.

Wont be happening tomorrow, not sure when at the moment

Another option might be the black version of the SME IV, or the SME IV.Vi. Of course the regular IV would work fine too, but would probably look a bit odd.

My Dyna Rua will before long require a retip. Iā€™ve been telling myself that itā€™s a superb cartridge and all I need. I donā€™t need a XVS1ā€¦

Sorry @Dunc for hijacking your thread!

You were saying above that you were giving your money away, if you get the 20/3/309 in a few months youā€™ll regret it and PX the 309 for a V so can you not save money in the long run by getting them both now and running some other cartridge for a while? A secondhand/reconditioned DV X2 has many of the qualities XV1T in the medium term

Given your history, Iā€™m surprised you arenā€™t exploring other options at this price, like Brinkmann and Vertere.

I can understand personally, because the build quality of the SME sets it apart the competition. IMHO.
The look and design is also different from most.
I am more and more thinking personally for a Vertere MG1 with Lyra Delos. My dealer could trade the Rp10. But if I had 16k, the 20/3 would be on my short list.

Mr Chicken- the Vertere is very special, would be interested to hear what you thought.

Thatā€™s the pairing I have ended up with and itā€™s fabulous.

Waiting to sort a 282/Hicap dr/200 to help it out a bit compared to the Nait XS 2 itā€™s running through at the moment

I really like the look, the build quality and more importantly the sound.
Almost decided that I want the V arm and this cartridge, that means a 20/3 is too far away,
The 20/3 has a heaver base and sub base and so has 2 extra rubber bands on each support, this gives more mass and so helps improve its resistance to vibration, apparently it can give a bit more bass, we will see.
But the arm and the cartridge will be far more a sonic improvement over a 20/3, 309 arm and a lesser cartridge, than say a 20/2, V arm and the cartridge I have been using, apparently?
I guess we will see.

I might see if I can hear other turntables, but thatā€™s not easy obviously right now, plus I will be going second hand and not new, so again adds to the difficulty

Where are you located Dunc? Looks like you are ā€œall inā€ as they say in the poker world. Old kit gone, and choices to make. Cartridges are tricky when is comes to a refurbish or used version, buyer beware unless you know the person or a dealer that it came from for used, and while there are success stories for a refurbished cartridge with new stylusā€™ and re-tips, there are also stories of unhappy consumers as the delivery just isnā€™t the same.

To be honest I am trying to just do a deal on this one, as i have just fallen for it so much, and it would be so easy for me, if this could be sorted.

I wanted to write ā€œKleos ā€œ. I have already a Delos. Would trade my Rp10/ Delos for it.
So how do you find the Mg1? Have you compared vs P10 or P8?
I will buy, if I can buy, without listening to it. But a lot here has Vertere or Roksan TMS and are very happy.
Canā€™t see how it could not be better vs the P10. @Bluesfan , have you compared it vs a Rega Rp10 or P10?

When I sold mine, I changed all the rubbers. Normally SME advises to change them every 3 years.
Put also some drops of oil into the motor.
These turntables can last a lifetime, as they are built like a tank.

Hi FR

I wanted to, but couldnā€™t audition a P10 as there were none available in New Zealand, and apparently none arriving until June.

I compared the DG-1 to a P8 and much preferred the DG-1. In both cases using stock cartridges.

Then I compared the MG-1 to the DG-1 and that was that. (In that case, with the same MM cartridge on the MG-1 as is included on the DG-1.)

I didnā€™t listen to any other turntables. Itā€™s not really possible to audition them side by side from different retailers here. By that stage Iā€™d decided which retailer I preferred so stuck with what they offer, which is Vertere and Rega.

In addition, I liked the videos Touraj features in, explaining some of the engineering decisions behind the design. For me, that boosted the credibility of Vertere in my mind. Iā€™ve since talked to him and heā€™s just as enthusiastic over the phone as in his videos.

If the DG1 is better vs the P8, itā€™s a good news. The P8 is at the level of Rp10.
You will need soon a much better phono than stageline, to see what the MG1 can really offer.
But no hurry. Enjoy your fabulous deck. I made a lot of research and canā€™t see a better deck for that price. ( if I see the build quality and all the feedbacks from different forums).
Maybe SME 15/a. But I donā€™t like its looks.
SME 20/3. If only I could. Or Avid Acutus SP . Both well outside my budget.

Yes I agree. Although recently I tried a Vertere Phono-1, and, even after trying a few different settings, preferred the Stageline.

One day Iā€™d like to try a Superline, perhaps when the Delos wears out. But yes much to enjoy until then.

The Vertere phono is an 1k phono. Itā€™s really a very minimum budget phono for that kind of turntable.
Superline, Rega Aura, Ear 88 pb, Nagra Vps ā€¦should be fine.
I found that phono stage are even more important vs the cartridge. Better have a 3k phono and 1k cart than the contrary.
But we are hijacking Dunc thread.

Enjoy

Hi FR,
I have not compared a P10 directly with the MG-1 in a back-to-back audition.

Either is a great turntable choice, depending on your budget.

re the MG-1, I recommend the upgraded armtube wiring and the best motor controller to TT cable you can afford.

Best regards, BF
