High End Munich 2023

It’s Martin bodybuilder Collum, alias Audio Shrek.

I will not create a playlist - as I am not interested in all music which I heard, and anyhow the combination is sometimes not the best to go through. I use the list myself to sometimes hear things back on my own system or to get inspired to explore more music I don’t know. While with my close to 27.000 albums, I have quite a collection…., always at the show I get away with something I want to have in addition.

Somebody asked me about the process of going to the show. So I am happy to tell you how I go about this.

Normally I try to only go to the listening rooms, as it is impossible to also cover the halls…., and most before my 2nd day I make a selection of what I still want to cover. I actually will improve next year and make already the selection before. As it’s just impossible to cover everything at the show. So it’s better to then skip less interesting items to ensure you have everything you wanted to see.

In the room I tend to quickly make some pictures, sit and I then open my notepad on the iPhone. I try to Shazam every song, make notes about what I heard at which room and then I listen to every song and write down listening experiences. With writing exactly down in keywords what I heard, I am capable to later on when I don’t wait to long to recollect in full Proza my listening experiences.

After the show I write per room, make screenshots of the relevant Shazam and start writing. If needed I might quickly google something if I missed the name of the exact component etc…

The show for me is more about the listening pleasure, then getting completely excited about the devices and speakers.

I am of course aware that I am biased as everybody. So I always try to challenge myself if I am overly optimistic or critical about a room. So this year I was also more critical about MBL who are normally in the top three or five, but this year the tuning of the system wasn’t as perfect as usual, I belief they tried to create a certain effect and give the system an edge……

That was my question, thanks for the elaborate answer.

Birt. Thank you so much for your detailed writings on the show. I have been both excited and enlightened about systems and sounds which I can only dream of hearing, let alone owning. Your enthusiasm for the music and the sound is infectious and it relights my interest as I read your reports. I now have so much more to listen out for as I test upgrades that I may consider for the future.
If I could buy you a drink I would. :tumbler_glass:

Thanks it’s a pity we are all far away from each other, could be such a nice idea to every now and then visit a forumnites listen to their system and music choices and enjoy….

I will also cover the show later in autumn, that’s my contribution to the community. It’s nice that I can give at least some level of understanding to others who can’t visit Munich what Munich is about….

do you go to the show alone? Or with your friends?

Sheesh, I definitely couldn’t sit in front of these at home on my own.
I’d be scared the speakers were going to march forward and eat me.
Definitely Sci-Fi movie villains akin to Velociraptors…

I normally go with a friend, but last two years he couldn’t make it unfortunately. We normally at the show go our own ways and exchange experiences in the car home afterwards. It’s more fun to experience it with somebody else, so I hope he will be able to join again next year.
