IKEA Kallax for LPs?

Thats the one… :astonished:

Yeah, that one was build incorrectly. The outer frame is oriented correctly, but the inner shelves are off 90º.

This is a failure to RTFM. It’s not hard.

The Tylko stuff is quality, but a bit costly, I have one of their TV stands.

Yikes, “a bit costly” is an understatement LOL. It doesn’t appear to be available in the U.S. anyway, but just one unit with about 12’ of linear storage for vinyl is more costly than all the Kallax systems I have in two rooms with 85’ of linear storage space.

It would cost me about €11,000 to replace the Kallax (about 10% as much) with Tylko, not counting shipping costs,

I’m not looking! Baltic birch costs have gone up substantially recently, I suspect Tylko have been affected by that as I’m pretty sure that’s what they use in their units

There’s a guy on Etsy by the name of Ryan Tinsel. His stuff is oak and designed for LP and CD. Very elegant and very costly. The units were originally made by Per Madsen in San Francisco. Ryan purchased the rights from the estate. We have the original units from Per.

The units have wheel bases and sit on top of each other using wooden pegs. Each unit can hold a 100 LPs and up to 180 CDs. The original CD units only held 90. We have the 90 CD unit version.

In our second bedroom which we use as an office, we have added LP storage. That is custom hardwood cherry furniture made by a furniture designer/carpenter. Again very costly but in both instances you get what you pay for.

I think in the end, Ikea Kallax is the only practical product for very large collections (i.e. thousands of LPs) unless you have lots of money to burn.

I would like to get more of the custom Morad units from divider-records.com. But this one alone is about $1600. It holds about 300-350 records.

They did this one custom for me in Black Ash and with legs trimmed to match the height of my Naim Fraim.

Just to let you know my experiences. I bought a 4x4 kallax shelf and the kallax structure support. I would recommend not filling the shelves completely with vinyl because there was a slight sagging in the middle when using that support. Given that they recommend a max of 13kg for each compartment and vinyl amounts to 20+ kg and seeing the unit sag, I would avoid using that stand. Now the kallax is sat directly on the floor, fully filled compartments, with long shelves horizontal as intended and also using the supplied 10 pads underneath. It is rock solid with no indication of sagging.

It’s only a Squire! But yes it was very secure until I took it down to build new wall to wall shelving to hold more albums
Pictures when complete in 2/3 weeks :crossed_fingers::+1:

When I had my vinyl, I used record storage from iCubes, which was made from Birch plywood.

They were supplied ready assembled and are very solid, much heavier than Kallax.

Just out of interest has anyone looked into/considered the loads on the surface that they are put on. Floors with wooden joists :flushed: or concrete floors on top of breeze blocks loaded on concrete beams with steel mesh to re enforce the concrete …. Sorry if my terminology in building work is not correct but I think you have the idea

After all with a kallax 4x4 we are talking of close to 300kg with a kallax shelf surface area of 0.573 m2

No I wouldn’t hang anything over my LP12 either, P6 is ok though
New room layout for second system, once finished, should mean nothing hanging over system

Bad… :sunglasses:

I know Kallax seems to be the usual / default / logical choice for record racks, but has anyone used IKEA Ivar shelves for LP storage?

I’ve been researching options for my work room refurb, and was thinking of exploring this system, as it looks more flexible and versatile, and with a little ingenuity and perhaps some reinforcement, could provide a better solution than Kallax… Image courtesy of IKEA…

I doubt that they would support the loads

I would be wary of loading that up with records. Too open and not heavy enough.

IKEA Ivar 4x4 shelf unit is rated at 30kg per shelf, vs 13kg for Kallax.

Just saying

Real wood vs MDF anyone?

well I’ll be…never would have thought that. i should have done some research before spouting off :grinning:

I do like the look of it - would work in some decor. But i also do like the closed in nature of the Kallax and how they perfectly fit albums and divide them.

But would you need the equivalent of bookends for the lower shelves?

I say try it out and post some pics and tips here!
