Anybody have info on the supposed second pressing expected in March??

It’s a lovely album indeed I have a Capitol US repress of 1978, nothing special as sound quality..

So thank you for highlighting this, I just ordered a copy, should be delivered next week.

Josquin beat me to it. Just got the Tone Poet e mail. I like this LP but not like wee small hours. Hope the do Songs For Only the Lonely

A great album that’ll have to be going somewhat to beat the mono 2016 pressing that is extremely well received and can be picked up easily.

This is a good page that details the best pressings for this album:

I’ll more than happy with that one so will give this one (no doubt it will be well done though) a miss :+1:

This new one will likely be much better. As with Wee Small Hours, Joe and Kevin located the phono reels for all the tracks, and assembled a new mono master that has never been used previously. Joe says this reissue is transformative.

Obviously, that page you reference doesn’t know about this one yet, because it hasn’t been released, and none that it compares are mastered from the phono reels used for this new release. Will be interesting to see if they revise that once this new one is released.

Possibly, just remember one man’s ‘better’ is another man’s ‘different’.

Obviously once it’s released and people have spent their hard earned on it, it’ll be better than sliced bread (as we say here!).

Joking aside I’m sure it’ll be great, but as mentioned I’m perfectly happy with my copy :+1:

I see that page is by Matthew Luthens. He definitely knows his stuff, and is the mastering engineer for many great reissues of recent years. Whether or not he revises his page, I suspect he’ll have something to say about this new reissue over on the Steve Hoffman Music forums (where is a moderator and regular contributor). I wonder if he’s already heard a test pressing. No doubt there’s already a thread there about the release. I’ll check and see if he said anything yet.

For a bit more info, I found this from Joe in my emails from last fall, he said,

Capitol ran two identical decks at that time. The tracks from one of them were used to assemble the final cutting master. This master was then used many 100s of times for production. The tracks from the other deck were then put on what were called “phono reels”, and aside from being used for some singles, were not touched after that for analog production. We assembled the phono reel tracks into side A/B of the album for the very first time earlier this year. The difference in fidelity is a bit shocking. Frank is in the room. It’s like a big veil has been lifted.

This information applies equally to both Wee Small Hours and Swinging Lovers.
