Internet radio not working

Yeah, but what happens if @Stevesky decides to join a monastery, or suchlike :grin:?

Naim HR will have a succession and replacement plan for all employees.

I agree. The new Naim radio service is excellent on Gen 2 streamers and very good on those Gen 1 models which can run it. I think Naim’s response shows a high level of concern for and commitment to customers and offers a high degree of future-proofing. I have another brand of streamer in another system and it has essentially lost all BBC stations. And it is newer than my QB1. I find the comparison stark.

It is certainly unfortunate that some very early boxes can’t be updated and I sympathise with owners. But computing technology does get out of date really quickly as I’ve found with my 7 year old iMac which can’t run the latest version of PhotoShop.

The BBC has been problematic for years. Even worse than ever with the awful dependence on the Sounds app.
My late wife was an avid World Service listener all her life, but I gave up a few years ago

How do I do a firmware update on a unitilite?
I have been looking for an hour and can’t find out how to do it
Thanks

Well I disagree. The only time I use the Sounds app is when traveling, otherwise it’s directly through my streamers. I do think it’s a great shame that the Beeb dropped FLAC broadcasts after experimenting with them at the Proms a few years ago. But their highest resolution stream is still pretty good and a good FM tuner is one of the highest quality sources around.

There’s also something about the BBC’s engineering techniques that gives a holistic sound picture in contrast to the way some recordings can almost “dissect” the performance. Choral Evensong on R3 is often a good example as are many live broadcasts of evening concerts or lunchtime chamber recitals.

Thank you Richard. do you have any suggestion on a alternative device>

Don

You probably already have devices such as a computer, phone or tablet that could be used, and some other members have mentioned some devices, as well as ways to use your computer to provide IR.

Is the update available for the unitilite?
I’ve had my system a few years and the CD drawer doesn’t work, after already having it repaired. Spotify connect has never worked properly, DAB radio has stopped working completely, and now I don’t even have internet radio.
So I have a system where I can’t listen to any music.
Has anybody else had these problems or is it just me?

Yes, it should be available for Unitilite - see here;

Make sure the App is fully up to date and follow the instructions in the download link. Delete all old vTuner presets.

I don’t think @castalla is criticising the sound production or sonic quality, more the stubborn, intractible insistence on the Sounds app. It’s clear that the BBC Sounds team (and I only refer to them) draw their lessons from dubious big tech firms. My jaw dropped when I monitored how much tracking there is in the Sounds app. One could overlook that on the basis that it’s used to inform their programming, but It’s a terrible app. The Sounds team behave like big tech, but lack the innovation of big tech.

I disagree. The sound quality is abysmal on the sounds app.

He says “even worse than ever … with the Sounds app”. To me that implies it was bad even without/before the Sounds app. That’s what I was challenging.

Roger

The Beeb underwent a major shift from mp3 to dash-hls streams a few years back. This disenfranchised a lot of Internet radio listeners almost overnight and without any consultation with various brands. The process was a disgrace. I believe Sounds was developed as a mobile phone app with little regard for how other internet users might be accessing content.

Thank you for the reply
Can I update via the app or remote?
I am on the Naim mailing list and I haven’t received any new about this problem/update,
I would have expected them to send out an email.

For clarification, the BBC (as an organisation) are capable of excellent sound. Just don’t expect it through the BBC Sounds app.

Exactly.

@Richard.Dane, I have a MuSo QB1 and I’ve updated to the latest firmware. It has restored missing channels, but I’m encountering an issue when connecting to certain stations. BBC R3 HD in particular. Sometimes it loads briefly, cuts off, then just seems to hang. I have to circle round other stations and keep trying. This has happened to me numerous times now. (Interestingly, it’s been during the small hours of night. I’m not sure if the timing is relevant.)

If you follow the link in Richard’s post you will see all the information you need. But anyway for Unitilite you can update the firmware yourself but you have to do it by running an update program on a PC or Mac. You can’t do it via the app or remote. The instructions are in the link Richard provided. It’s quite involved, but intended to be done by customers (or dealers).

I updated my Unitilite and once you have set up to do the update, it takes about ten minutes.
