These guys are an absolutely recommended bunch - good sounding, relaxed jazz…
Some wonderful suggestions here, I’ve tapped a few into Tidal tonight and like what I’m hearing so far. Something I bought a long time ago and recently rediscovered was this:
This was in last Saturdays Irish Times, an amusing read…
One of my favourites.
Modern jazz.
Yes, an odd term to apply to jazz, which is all in the modern period.
I.e. the past 500 years since a lot of humans tried to shake off the some of the more stupid traditions of ancient and prehistoric times
But, while doing this, also unfortunately invented some even more stupid habits In the process!
Anyway, don’t get put off by the term modern.
Contemporary jazz is a rich and fertile terrain of creativity
So funny, but so true
Arvo Pärt - Tabula Rasa, Fratres, Sinfonie 3
I didn’t know Arvo Pärt wrote jazz.
Well, thats correct. Wrong thread…
Rateyourmusic has in it’s description for this album.
chaotic, instrumental, dense, avant-garde, improvisation, spiritual, passionate, complex, manic, dissonant, acoustic, technical, anxious, uncommon time signatures, triumphant, noisy
Just about sums it up.
These are the most important jazz recordings ever: the lodestone, the source, etc. If you don’t know Satchmo’s Hot fives and Sevens, you don’t really know jazz.
Curtis Amy & Dupree Bolton - Katanga. 1963 on Pacific Jazz
Chick Corea & Return To Forever - Light as a Feather. Recorded in 1972
This is a good list for a change.
What a fantastic cover shot
And an equally fantastic album inside.
