Couple of elderly gentlemen captured in a beautifully recorded recital.
You know you are in for a treat from Ben’s first few notes on Hollerin
Harry plays his usual selection of phrases but with a splendid burnished tone.
Jimmy drops a few Basie chords over a nicely pulsing rhythm.
Coltrane it ain’t but if I had a choice of clubs on fantasy 52nd street this is the one I would choose.
On Qobuz
Pleased I can still get enthusiastic about something.
Quite different.
Where Ben is upfront and full of bluster Lester slides about and the full list of stylistic vagaries are on display. He obviously is not happy on the up tempo One O’clock. Reminds me of walking my old dog
‘Go as fast as you like but I won’t be keeping up’.
Never been overly keen on Oscar as an accompanist. A few less notes would be ideal.
Harry reworks Harry’s solos.
Recording is a bit scruffy compared with Sweets.
Special tho for later Pres. His short solo on ‘That’s All’ could break a heart.

Hey @Nick1940 also Harry Edison was new to me, so I tried the Sweets album. Thanks for recommending! So many superb albums passing this thread. Really enjoy it

Some pretty fair bass playing here by Ray Brown.
Nice that Bill gets to show us at length what a fine pianist he was.
A great admirer of Monk. Many similarities.

Teus Nobel is an award winning trumpettist from The Netherlands. His albums are a joy to listen to and even a little melancholic. He teams up quite iften with jazz-pianist Jef Neve who is from my country Belgium
Another collection of the elderly enjoying themselves.
No prisoners were taken. No high art on display.
I haven’t read the album notes, Googling ‘ very saxy’ offers invitations to investigate several ladies’ underwear catalogues, but i believe
Cobb Hawkins Tate Davis. As you listen from your armchair.
That has chased the rain away.

One more from the byways and back streets of jazz music.
Gales and Riley so smooth the onstand libation was probably Duckhams.
Mance rollin ‘em just out of church.
Our two principals enjoying life. Easy to tell apart. Crowd enjoying them.
Pretty good Mintons recording.
I always feel privileged to love this music.
On Qobuz.

John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension live at Ronnie Scott’s
I’ve just posted this on the WAYLT thread. Currently playing it via Qobuz for only the second time, but it’s so good that I’ve had to order a copy. Superb musicianship (but what else would you expect with McLaughlin?!) and great sound and soundstage.
