From 1968
Great album.
Chance to hear more of JR Monterose .Kenny along with Donald Bird were my two favourite trumpeters from this period.
Obviously a full house as we seem to be sitting on the lid of the slightly unloved piano but apart from that nice club ( must be 10 years since I last visited one) atmosphere.
Surprised nobody mentioned Beamo by Leszek Możdżer, Lars Danielsson and Zohar Fresco yet:
Fascinating use of three pianos in three different tunings (one at the modern standard of A = 440 Hz, one at A = 432 Hz, and a third in a decaphonic tuning, dividing the octave into 10 equal intervals).
Great interview with Leszek Możdżer about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vgoaIsUCi8
The full video of the track briefly shown in the interview is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpR_P4a9elQ
The album ends with a beautiful rendition of Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-QH_28RohI
And on that note, another worthy rendition of that song is on a forthcoming album from the same ACT label: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clEDwjODHU8
Another very talented South African Jazz musician Malcom Jiyane I have his excellent 2021 record Umdali and 2024’s True Story is also well worth a listen.
Thanks, will check out.
More good music to check out! Thanks
My record shop owner recommended Nicole Grover latest album, Plays. It is rather good.
I have noticed that a lot of female sax players have found their way into my collection recently:
Jasmine Myra, Lakecia Benjamin, Nubya Garcia, Cassie Kinoshi and now Glover.
Not heard this artist will look her up Chelsea Carmichael is worth a look too as is Melissa Aldana.
Perhaps not the most exciting program of Ducal compositions even with a little help from Sweet Pea. But hopefully we can all hum along.
Some strange but fitting elements of style nestle into the soloing,on a well recorded fine piano. His respect for the master is obvious.
The knighthood was not offered up locally but by the President of Liberia.
Yes, Aldana, is very good too, I have one of her albums.
Saw them perform this live last year. Must dig this very good album out again.
Another Female Sax player! I have been disproportionally enjoying the music of several female players of late.
Emma Rawicz & Gwilym Simcock Big Visit, is a nice fairly easy album full of good music and good playing. Simcock impressed me when I saw him playing with Pat Metheny, and I was curious about Rawicz.
I’m enjoying this one. Definitely got the Aaron Parks vibe about it, but a bit more acoustic than some of his recent albums. Beautiful improvised music.
iii is one of the most best things I’ve ever heard on piano
