When people comment on how much i have spent on hifi, i point out that they seem to accept its OK for people to buy yachts bobbing up and down in a marinaā¦rarely used. I use my hifi every day, great vfm by comparison, each to their own.
Can I buy a new Porsche 911 for a 120,000 euros?? Maybe even including the Burmeister Audio system! Oh and make it a Targa 4Sā¦
You could squeeze a Burmester into a basic 911 for that price. For a Targa 4s you will be digging quite a bit deeperā¦
Most people feel uncomfortable with others āunusualā choices (different from their own, of courseā¦).
This is true for everything: money spent, sexual orientation and even how we die!
I think most who have ātheir one big thingā should honestly feel good about others who reward themselves with the trappings of success and realize that we all are different and respond to different things. Think of what the economy would be without that special car, boat, yacht, hi fi, second home, telescope, big house, full shop, second hobby business. As long as that is balanced with proper home life and health, then its all good. Hopefully they remember the charity of choice also.

Hi Max,
I loved your musings here. Iām new to Naim but have always admired and aspired to the very musical experience that most of their gear brings. I have gone new age, so have invested in the Uniti Star. Itās compact size, all in one form, delivers great sound (sure Naim separates could do better) but so could many things, but nothing delivers so much in such an amazing package. Back to loving my music again with Naim.
Cheers,
Craig
I have no problem what people spend their money on I was just questioning how a Dac any Dac could be worth those vast sums.
Exactly!
I am happy with where I am with a great system on full Fraim.
LP12, Kore, Lingo 1, Cirkus, Graham Slee Reflex M phonostage
82 > Supercap 2 > 2 x 135s
NDS > 555PS
Focal Aria 936 > Naca 5
Whatās not to like? When more funds become available I will be looking at ND555, 552 and maybe 500.
I wouldnāt go outside of Naim until then, if ever!
I have heard other great set ups but nothing gets the floor tapping more than Naim for me.
Definitely had the upgradeitis big time. Thatās stopped now. It is easy to get pulled into constantly wanting more!
I rarely go to the pub - that has saved more than the cost of my HiFi over the years - by a long way. And kept me healthier.
I have a toe in each camp. At home I have a Nait XS2 with a flat cap, my dear old CD 5 with a Hicap, a stageline with a Rega PS 24 and an NDX with Kudos C2s. I love it. No urge to change except maybe if or when the CD5 dies Iāll trade the Hicap in with the flatcap and the Stageline and XS2 on an XS3. All of it is either gently used or demo models (except the Nait and the Rega which I bought new, but on sale). The beauty of Naim is the ability to mix and match and trade used gear for what you paid for it. Itās amazing that way.
At my office I have stepped outside of Naim amplification with a Conrad-Johnson CAV 45 control amp. Itās gorgeous. It has pushed my Nait 2 to the cupboard. Itās just fun to try other amps. In the past I have tried Creek, Sugden and Bryston but the Nait 2 had reigned supreme until the C-J came along. At this point I am unloading excess Naim gear at my office and have yet to loose a nickel on my used purchases.
This is one of the more interesting threads I have read in a while. Many thoughtful posts!
If you like the Naim sound you need some Naim speakers to replace those āorrible Focals.
But just think how much youāve spent on hair shirts.
Not really - I donāt particularly like pubs.
Except where said second home is in a place and of a type that it pushes up house prices beyond that which local inhabitants can afford.
My wife and I totally giving up alcohol has definitely improved the monthly cash flow here! More so re wine and spirits purchases for home consumption than alcohol consumed outside the home, but both for sureā¦
Yeah but that applies equally to first homes too. I know firsthand.
When we moved in here 6 years ago, it was a newly gentrified area and still ongoing. There were protesters outside our building because the gentrification pushed out long time local residents.
Now gentrification went into overdrive and the minimum cost of building a small house here is about $4 million. We ourselves are pushed out by property prices!
But itās just the way of things. I donāt begrudge it. Thereās no malicious intent behind gentrification, buying yachts, hifi, second homes. Even with DACs costing $100k thereās nothing inherently bad in that. A bit loopy maybe. The good or bad is all down to the context of the buyer, not the product. A consumer might be a selfish rich narcissist. Or they might regularly donate most of their $billion income to charity and volunteer time, and treat themselves to a $100k DAC with some of the 1% left over. We donāt know.
Yeah! Those orrible Focals! I like them but am not sentimental about them. Definitely would upgrade them in the future at some point. They look lovely though !!
Funnily enough had Linn Kelidhās before which were very nice, but didnāt have enough oomph!
What would you recommend in the Naim range is speakers for my system?
I would want something strong enough to take the 135s.
Thanks.
