Linn LP12 Top Plate

Stu, You and I and a few others are hardcore. We have to accept that some migh not be
C.

You are probably right. However, I was just reading on another thread a comparison between NBLs and S-800s. Lovely stuff!

LOL. I sold the Credos for 50 quid less than paid for them 15 years previously. Who said Naim kit costs a lot

Good question.

My original top-plate is a bit tired looking and scratched in places - I wonder how much an original replacement would be for cosmetic reasons.

I really like the look of the Tiger Paw top plate I must be honest.

Sorry to digress, but how about plinths?

My late 80’s LP12 has a non-fluted black plinth - the paint has worn on some corners and again it looks tired. Maybe it was cheaper or black was more fashionable then, but I wish I’d gone for a fluted real wood finish - do Linn do replacement plinths?

My plinth is black too. It was the most expensive option at the time and I wanted black. £540 it cost me in 1988

The plinth or the LP12 !!!

I had an Axis before the LP12 and wish I’d not part exchanged it for the LP12. Must try to locate the LP12 receipt! I think I took the K9 from the Axis and had an original Akito on the LP12 costing around £150 for the arm.

Lingo 1, Linto, original Ekos, Arkiv and cirkus upgrade ensued in the early 90’s.

Many potential upgrades I could take advantage of…

Yes, Linn do replacement plinths. Chris Harben (Woodsong) and others do some posh ones if interested.

Chris Harban plinths are the finest wood plinths you’ll see. The finish is the best wood finish I’ve ever seen and the construction materials/craftsmanship is impeccable.

I listened to choices of top plate years ago and didn’t like them. I still use the linn steel one. Not ruling them out, but happy with the original Linn atm.

Funnily enough was just looking at some examples at Cymbiosis - some of those are truly stunning.

They look way better in real life. Chris polishes the wood to an extremely fine level, then finishes it off with an oil. This really gives the wood a beautiful colour depth that I’ve not seen on any wood anywhere. It not just the finish, it’s the construction materials, glue, etc that make them special.

My top plate is original 1978, so no corner bolt. I was told that later top plates are thinner. I upgraded the plinth to get corner bracing. I think those interested that many UK Linn specialists will have plinth taken in exchange. The move to Lingo 4 was relevatory, at least try to audition a deck with one. As usual if you are in the UK @cymbiosis has many options to listen to.
And, I have a Rega as well, it serves nicely with a budget cartridge for those charity shop records I may not want to chance my “best” one on. I prefer the Linn, my choice because my room, my equipment, my hearing, like everyone else here, is unique.
Without wanting to start any argument, as a non-Naim owner, when I read some of the threads on this forum I tend to feel that if an LP12 is a money pit, so is the path that many Naim adherents follow. You make your choice and pay your money.

Linn did “upgrade” the top plate when they introduced the corner bolt.

As for 3rd party ones, having listened to both Khan and Karmen, I would not swap the stock item even if it was free as I think they make the sound harsh and unmusical, but I seem to be in the minority on that.

As for Regas, I had a few over the years. They are good value for sure, but unless you can’t resist upgrading I find you can build very competitive LP12s for similar prices if you work with a dealer that really knows what they are doing instead of pushing stuff like “Akurate LP12s” (and yes, I know Linn is using that terminology as well).

I would still recommend hearing an L4 first and if need be wait until you’ve saved enough to afford it

As someone else has rightly pointed out some upgrades in the hierarchy may be unaffordable at a particular time, some dealers will be happy to sell you something else, their in business after all, but this is where expensive mistakes can come in and lead to disdapointment.

When did I say that?

:grinning:

The LP12. I still have the receipt

Thanks I will certainly consider it. I could get a Kore and L4 but I have to decide if it is worth it for a small number of records played per week.
I’ve owned my LP12 from new and I’m not likely to part with it.

I think what Dread and I are both saying is that if, for whatever reason, you only decided to go for one of them, then the Lingo 4 would be the one. (Subject to your dem.)

I know. Thanks.
:grinning:

It doesn’t “Have to be changed immediately” it’s optional if or when one chooses
:grinning:

Let’s agree to disagree on all these points then …no need to keep digging back and requoting me…save your time
