Linn Sara 9 speakers

I have recently bought a pair of Linn Sara 9 speakers and was going to use them with a Nac 72, HiCap and Nap 180. The speaker has 4 speaker connections and I thought they were for Bi-wiring and the jumper connections were missing. I started to make some jumpers up with some Naim NACA5. I went to connect them up to the amp, I noticed it stated on the back active speaker when all four terminals are connected. Does this mean they are not bi-wired speakers or can be only used with two amps or an amp with output with 4 sets of speaker outputs. I have an old Aura 100, this works fine with them.

I didn’t want to damage my Naim amps. As they are not made for Bi-wiring. Thanks for your help in advance.

I have Linn Sara with the XLR Connection in my other system.

If they are active you need a Naxo or Snaxo active crossover.

I’m assuming you are connecting this bi-wired to the Saras. If all is working ok, it sounds like your Saras have a conventional crossover inside (not bypassed for active operation) and so have just bi-wire connections on the back.

For the Naim amp, connect it up as you originally suggested, with a single length of A5 to each speaker and use jumpers at the speaker end.

Given that it says ‘active speaker’ on the back, I’d be very cautious.

I’m not clear what you mean by ‘works fine’ - how did you test?

Could you post a picture of the back of the speaker?

I think the label on the back shows a configuration of “active” and “passive” depending on the original purchase. Yours are most likely passive but used in a bi-wire configuration . What did the previous owner say?

Do yours look like this?

Take a picture of the label on the back like the one above. If you jumper the terminals of an active Sara, you’ll surely blow the tweeters.

Yes this looks exactly like mine but without the links.

Thank you for all your help.

Here is a picture of the back of the speaker.

The active Sara units were available to order. In active mode, the four banana sockets were positioned horizontally.
With the Sara 9, the four banana sockets are positioned vertically to facilitate mono or bi-wiring.
Without bridges, bi-wiring or passive bi-amplification is required. Otherwise, as you have already done, jumpers are required for mono wiring.

Really helpful of Linn to supply a loudspeaker with terminals that don’t match either of the options shown on the label…

Only if active there are two more in the upper row

I am sorry for not keeping up with you helpful guys. All my bi-wired speakers the positives are in line with each other. Top to bottom and the negative is also the same. But in the diagram label it shows the negative below a positive on the left hand side and on the right hand side positive is below a negative. Do I connect the jumpers the same as Quad57 links. Or do I cross the jumper cables.

Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it

Sara 9 are Biwire only.

Hi lgel,

Does this mean I shouldn’t use links or jumper cables. Thanks for your help.

I was considering doing the same as Quad57 with the links in place.

Hi,no you need link plates if you don’t Biwire.
Sara 9 were not made as active as Linn never made active crossovers for them, it was the earlier Sara´s that was made as active and used with Naim Naxo active crossovers and Naim amps, that was before Linn made amplifiers.

Thank you, lgel.

You have answered a question that has been on my mind for decades. I have an early pair of Linn Sara (XLR) type and was given information about the Naim active X-over when I got them. I never ventured into active with them. I run them passive with a NAP250. Thank you for the advice. I will get some jumpers made tomorrow and have a play. Thanks for the help. Take care.
