Linn Sondek LP-12 newbie

The friend who inspired me to buy a Naim Amplifier has a Rega 8, phonostage and MC Cartridge, through a Nait 2 into B&W 702 Signature speakers and his system sounds fantastic. It is in a much larger room than mine & his soundstage is huge.

I wouldn’t change my set up (which includes a LP12), but if I had to have his instead, I would still be very very happy.

I have run an Aria with my LP12 since 2019, it was superb & was recommended by my dealer.

As I have only used moving coils since the early 1980’s, I switched to the new Rega AOS earlier this year & was disappointed not to hear any great improvement from the Aria.

I think my Linn is plenty good enough to reveal any changes but suspect that my Nova’s pre-amp section is not good enough to show any improvements in the phono stage.

Your Aria will be fine & you will get huge enjoyment from the Linn.

I think one of two others on the forum may be using LP12’s……….

Thanks for your comments. I wonder whether I’ll need to adjust the Aria to the Linn? It was set up to match an Apheta 3 when I had my P8.

I believe you need to change the loading to work better with the Linn. I assume Apheta 3 had 100 ohms loading where your new cartridge might need more.

I remember that Nova would do a analog-to-digital conversion for the inputs. That could be the reason why you didn’t hear difference.

Yeah, that’s why I sold my Nova and got a SN2. A massive upgrade and all analogue especially adding a hi-cap

Congratulations like me, I’m sure you’ll never regret your choice nor look back and think- what if??? Occasionally you might find yourself frustrated by setup issues but you’ll get the hang of it all, as I am sure we all have, occasionally you’ll need expert assistance but for the most part it will just sing, and you’ll love it!

Well done on getting your LP12, because of arthritis in my hands I gave up vinyl many years ago

My very first serious turntable after my Dual CS505 was an LP12 with LVX Plus and A&R P12 cartridge, Valhalla power supply.

I remember picking it up at Audio Excellence in Cardiff in the eighties when they had the almost mythical small shop site, and everyone was there to see you off

I drove some 60 miles back home in my trusty old VW Beetle, anxiety ridden opening the box, a thing of beauty, set her up and wow, the smell was also brilliant like a new car smell, quality of course

Progressed through Nirvana upgrade and then to Ittok with finally Karma.

Finally sold it, do I miss it yes, but circumstances must and I would not want the risk of writing anything off

Good luck and I know you will love it

Thank you for sharing your experience with your Linn Sondek. I’ve always had a hankering for a this iconic record spinner, and finally I’ve got one now and a really good spec deck too.

Over the next few weeks I’ll share my experience setting it up. Can’t wait to play some new records I’ve purchased recently including, Joe Jackson’s new LP which I picked up at the, Philharmonic Theatre Liverpool tonight after watching Joe perform some old hits and new songs. He was, and his band, brilliant and a great evening was had.

And so do I. I got one 2 weeks ago or so, not up to the same level as you and that has a great benefit: cheaper upgrades in the first place

Oh congratulations on your purchase and what a stunner she is.

Many moons ago, I sold a top spec at the time lp12 and a top Naim system due to a house move and I have regretted it ever since.

Recently I put together a small system hoping I would be happy just to play music. It did not satisfy me ,should have known better. Anyway went from this to getting a reasonable Lp12 from a private dealer/business in the Hull area.

So Lp12 radical, core, karousel, Ekos se, Arkiv cartridge. Old cartridge but hardly used. Sounds good though. Rest of system. Is Musical Fidelity M6 si, and B &W 702 S3 speakers. I am awaiting Eversolo

A8 gen 2 to complete the digital side.

My question is how did your Lp12 differ from the Rega P8 in sound quality. There are arguments for each one being better than the other. I personally have never been a fan Rega turntables in the past, but have no doubt they are better than they used to be. I bought my lp12 blind although I was considering a P8 or a P 10, but didn’t get a demo. Remembering my Lp12 in the past just went ahead and bought if, Just wondered why you think your sondek was preferred.

Again congrats

Cheers P

Hi there, Thanks for your comments, When I first heard a ‘Selekt’ spec LP-12 the first thing I noticed was it sounded warmer and less ‘in your face’ so I was able to be more drawn into the music. The soundstage was huge too and I am already thinking of better amplification which can wait for a good while.

My P8 was a superb record spinner and I’ve also had the pleasure of listening to a P10 and a Naia, the Naia was spectacular but very analytical sounding compared with the more engaging presentation from the Linn.

I really thought I’d found my ‘end game’ turntable after listening to the Linn, and I know the Rega’s are brilliant at what they do but I’m happy with my new toy and can’t wait to get it playing records.

No doubt my comments will be debated and I’m ok with that. It’s just my personal preference.

A deck as classy as your profile pic no doubt.

Congratulations and enjoy. I’ve never owned one but can fully appreciate the timeless classic that an LP-12 is, and who knows, maybe one day.

Two Technics & two Rega’s here but your LP-12 looks a beauty.

Would that be an A&R P77 cartridge (or maybe a P78)?

Back in 2013 bought a LP12 with new Adikt mm and new Akito tonearm but was probably my worst purchase ever. That wobly thing only sounded good after very proper set up and endlesssssss tweaking.

Hope you are happy with the LP12

Congratulations on your new TT. Nice.

For what it is worth I have no other product that is still in nearly daily use after 37 years. Best purchase I have ever made I think, initially expensive but not per year or per day used. Plus it sounds great.

Enjoy your lp12, it looks a beauty and I am sure it will sound very much better than your Rega. You may like to think about placement. Where a Rega works well on a wall shelf, a Linn never gives its absolute best on a wall shelf. This is because walls vibrate in the horizontal plane but the lp12 suspension only works in the vertical plane. For optimal sound you need a lightweight table such as a timetable (best) or a sound organisation or even an ikea lack. If it needs to be on a heavy unit, think sideboard or naim fraim, you can use the trampolin or even some empty cassette boxes under the old rubber feet. The very best sound is a lightweight table, no trampolin and the original rubber feet.

Wrong. Properly set up it can sound fantastic. Mine does.

Agreed. A suspended sub-chassis on a wobbly plinth makes no sense.

I don’t doubt that yours sounds fantastic on a wall shelf. What I was saying was that it would sound even better on a well designed light weight table, especially if the table was stood on a solid floor. It is the laws of physics, the lp12 suspension does not react well to sideways vibration.
