Loosing faith in Naim

Great, thanks.

I mentioned in my reply to the factory tour thread sometime ago that Naim produce nothing now that would interest me or get me to part with hard earned cash, believe me I wasn’t being beligerant but honest.

I continue with CD replay and yes I know there will come a time when my 27 year old CDX will bite the dust, but it makes me sad the we have so many threads with equipment, set up issues etc.

I worked for a Naim/ Linn dealer back in the early 80’s and we never and if I missed it I apologize have anything like the issues that are being raised here. Granted we only had the arrival of CD, and vinyl was still very much king

I’m not a technology phobic but surely to be stressed out again and again over it work’s,it doesn’t work, advancement cannot be supporting the opportunity to enjoy ones music.

I know that with my Ayre pre-amp every sixth step up produces a soft click (only audible when I’m next to the unit). I asked Ayre, who responded “works as designed.”

But in the case of this thread it’s been demonstrated that there is actually nothing wrong with the unit. If you look carefully at the ‘it doesn’t work’ threads, an awful lot of them are due to people not reading the instructions or, in the case of streaming, not paying attention to their network environment.

The fact that we see a worrying number of threads about equipment being delivered with faults is surely partly due to Naim being bigger than it was and producing more stuff, and partly due to the modern day love of moaning. However, beneath it all I do get the impression that quality control might not be as good as it could be.

Pressing any of the front buttons ….

is different than

Pressing and HOLDING any of the front buttons

Hi @Paul.B

Thanks for the time to share this information.

What i don’t understand is why this was not explained to the portuguese distributor, probably you guys only noticed when it was reported. It would avoid my unit being sent to Naim.

I was not naimless as i was provided with a substitute 222 (with the same issue) when mine went to Naim.

Hi @rcsm
I can only think that the service team wanted to check that it wasn’t an unusually loud pop. I’ll have a chat with the support/service team and see if we can get a bit more information available for the future. Perhaps it’s a bit of a communication breakdown between us in R&D and support (who are only upstairs!), but I’ll go and have a chat with them now.

I’ll also have a look into the remote control pairing. I think we may have to get marketing to update the user guide online for this. That will be extremely frustrating for any others following the guide.

The clever designer designs out the idiot operator. They make it ( !@#£%^) proof. Be that network environments or wiring or buttons to press.

As an aside my ndx2 had 2 unnecessary trips to Salisbury under warrenty. As a beta user, there was an issue in the beta FW. Reported through the correct channels, but not acknowledged by the team. Numerous calls to my dealer, who replicated the issue and off the ndx2 went. Returned with same fault. 2nd time it had a complete new board. And now worked, until I got it home and updated FW to beta. Then I had to put 2 and 2 together. “ Discussed “ with naim support who said they don’t routinely check a units FW at service. Apparently they do now.

Regarding the pairing i don’t know exactly what happened.

I always did as in the User Guide, and it worked.

A few days ago, don’t know why, the remote was not paired, and i couldn’t do it in the same way.

I’ll say no more. These threads have a tendency of attracting members like hyenas to a rotting corpse.

So, Naim is like a “rotting corpse”.

Or walking dead? The meat is the ps.

I can understand people’s frustration over technology, a remote control for an instance, these things were invented in the 1950’s, that’s a loong time ago, and they used to work flawlessly back then, at least as far as I can remember my first experience was in the 90’s with my dad’s Sony Trinitron TV, no pairings whatsoever. Nowadays these simple devices seem to be way overcomplicated and essentially their function is the same as it ever was as far as I am concerned. It’s not just Naim here, it’s a broader issue imo.

However, if it was up to me, I would probably never put such a harsh thread tittle, but everybody is entitled to write whatever they feel like writiing. I am so happy my N50 does not have a remote…

We recently bought a new whizzy Panasonic telly. I looked at the instructions to see how to pair the remote. Inserting the batteries automatically paired the remote, no need to do anything. Maybe it’s because the Naim remote is Zigbee. We have a Gazco electric fire; that has Zigbee and also needs pairing. Why are things so complicated? Do they really need to be?

Yes that is way way beyond being just a Naim thing! Why smartphone controllable washing machines, dishwashers, central heating, fridges, freezers etc? It’ll be food mixers, sewing machines, electric drills and heated underwear next! Maybe “smart” remote control to turn your partner on before you get home…

@realdpg i understand your point of view, we are all different and i spoke from my “bleeding” heart.

I want to continue a Naimee, i really like Naim sound to the point that i just don’t bother to listen other gear (everytime i do it, there is something fundamental missing).

At the same time, i do feel disappointed and don’t regret expressing it as i did. I want to continue to have the confidence that i can buy from Naim.

I also don’t like to see threads saying how other gear is so much better than Naim etc but have to accept it. Even tough some of those brands i already listened and don’t like them.

My friend had a NAD stack for more than a year. M66 pre-dac-streamer and an M23-power. He recently upgraded to the new Cyrus gear. Both brands use the BlueOS platform. He never had a single networking problem. EVER.

Unfortunately, I like the (old) Naim sound. There has not been a single week in the past 10 years without some sort of networking hiccup to be overcome. From not seeing the units in the app, to randomly having the stream stopped mid song. Whatever works today, stops working next week.

The good news is, Naim sound is not what it used to be anymore. My next big upgrade, will be with a different brand altogether.

But I do love the Naim sound.

I love the NC Naim sound.

For my ears, the prat and musicality is still there but in a less coloured sound.

If i leave Naim, it’s game over for me.
