Love the 272 please update - 1 click like post

I know some people, I do my own trolling. Wouldn’t trust anyone else.

We better get back on topic.

After loving moving to Nain specifically because of the 272, I have gone through the XPS, then 555PS DR upgrade and am looking for the next upgrade… the follow on to 272 would be perfect for me, but I don’t want to go to the NDX2 + 555PS and a two box pre amp route… to many boxes when all the other boxes are also added (LP12, Lingo, phono preamp, power amp)…

So my thinking is wait till end of June in the hope that Naim announce something, if not I will be looking elsewhere… will be difficult as I will be looking for a major improvement to what I already have… I know the sound can be improved (I heard what a 555 could do…)…

But there are alternatives out there…

One question worth considering is whether it really has to be better. The 272, 555 and 300, optimised with mains, Fraim, fancy mains block and wires really is extraordinarily good. It costs so much to improve and that can be seen both as a blessing and a curse.

I would agree here … the only thing that is holding me back from buying a 272 now is that it doesn’t/cannot incorporate the latest streaming hw/sw

If any replacement was significantly more expensive due to other “improvements” I would probably consider a current spec 272 and find a work around to its streaming limitations

Rgds

The streaming is easy - all you need is Bubble UPnP on your NAS.

Saw the various reviews eventually - they don’t seem to be visible via Goggle Chrome but they are there using Edge. Let’s hope Naim take notice…maybe if Focal introduce an active speaker it will give added emphasis.

@Fred123, you could pick up a used 272 and buy a music server and easily have change from £3k. Then you have so may options; the right server will include Sonore Bridge too so you can run Roon over Ethernet, or via SPDIF.

Hi
Thanks yes in fact I could do it for just the cost of a s/h 272 … on the 'bay there are a couple under 2k …
I have a dedicated server I built running LMS and Roon so adding BubbleUpNp or similar would be relatively straight forward …
I currently have a Nova and am enjoying its flexibility and “modern screen” so if any 272.2 had the same streamer and display (but NOT the volume dial) I would be a happy bunny … ( controversial I know but I am guessing the screen functionality will increase with time )
With the “old” 272 I guess I’d just switch off the screen … no big deal
I love the Nova but I’m using it with a 250 and feel maybe the 250 deserves better … although I can’t complain …

I use MConnect Player HD on an iPad to get hires Qobuz and Tidal.

Sounds great.

Does anyone switch off the screen on their 272?

Does this make it sound better?

Mine is set to go off as quickly as possible - a few seconds. It reduces the likelihood of it burning out and costing £300 to replace.

I do, both my 272 and UQ2 are set to the minimum of 10 seconds.

Also when using the Kazoo app to control Qobuz via BubbleUPnP the 272 or UQ display only comes on when you adjust the volume not when selecting tracks.

Love the 272 but thinking of upgrade to ndx2 streamer.
I have the xps dr PS and NOW I wonder…
If I buy a ndx2…
Can I run it as a streamer and use the 272 as preamplifier still?
Will it be better to Power the ndx2 with the xps dr or the 272?
Or do I have to buy one more xps dr so they booth have externa PS?

There is also a NAP 300 on the system

Hi Thomas. All your questions are answered here

actually that is a good point.

Buy the ND5XS 2 as a steamer, but run the digital output into the 272/555DR (the DAC and preamp benefit from the 555DR)

upgrade of 272 is done…

Wouldn’t it be better to run it through the analog inputs, that way you’d have the newer DAC running into the 272 pre amp. Best of both worlds.

there is no new DAC. only a new streaming board.

I would have thought they’d update the DAC.

If that’s the case I wouldn’t upgrade my 272 just for the streaming board, I’d expect a new DAC.

Looking at the spec sheets 272 uses the Burr-Brown PCM1792A DAC and ND5XS2 PCM1791A DAC

Not sure what the differences are between to two.
