What are “Bronze M3 MkII??” Did you mean S3?
Thanks for highlighting my mistake Bart. Yes, I mean S3 not M3 - I have corrected my post.
Hi Davidf, I made a typo in my post - I meant to say S3 not M3, the weight is 77kg per speaker.
No worries - I was just scratching my head and wondering until I figured that you must have meant S3. I would have heard if there was an M3 MkII ha ha
If only I had the space and system to do a pair of M3 justice…not to mention the depth of pockets
Congrats Elfer! Those speakers are amazing!
Curious. My perception is quite the opposite.
The S3 MkII enclosure is brilliantly designed. The only speakers I audiotionned that do better, in terms of less enclosure coloration, are the M2 and M6. Not even the Q series are as good.
I don’t even mention the French and British speakers, I auditionned. In terms of enclosure coloration they really lag behind (from what I heard).
I suspect your perception is more a room effect then an actual speaker enclosure coloration. Whatever the speakers the room has a major impact on what we perceive (unfortunately).
In order to minimize that impact I spent a lot of time (and money) treating my room.
I had the same feeling with my previous speakers (Jean-Marie Reynaud Abscisse)They were good, very good at their price point. But didn’t do justice to a 500 DR series system.
When do you expect to receive your Magicos? Keep us posted and take some pictures!
Thanks Thomas, I’m really looking forward to them. The bonus was that the dealer offered his demo pair at a great price with SPOD and (international) delivery. They are already on the way and should be here mid week
I suspect your perception is more a room effect then an actual speaker enclosure coloration.
I am sure thats the case. The room was well treated but I believe too narrow for these speakers and the boxiness was simply due to the lack of distance to the side walls. I have heard this effect on several occasions and regardless of how close to walls speaker manufactures state they will “work”, many really come to life with some space around them.
In order to minimize that impact I spent a lot of time (and money) treating my room.
With my current speakers and the space they have, controlling the bottom end has never been a big problem. I expect to need some treatment to assist with the low frequency extension from the Magicos however. The room is quite lively and I want to reduce the RT but want to take a minimalist approach and not kill the room entirely. Last night I filled out the questionnaire from GIK and sent it off so I’m looking forward to that journey of discovery…
Speakers arrived today, positioned more or less where my old speakers were and wow, just wow. Expectations well and truly exceeded, truly exceptional speakers. Controlled, detailed, beautifully transparent and musical. Timbre and tone seem very accurate, voices particularly realistic - they just sound “right”. Important in my search for speakers was to avoid any that sound great for a while but become tiring over time or speakers that are easy to listen to but a bit emotionless or warm. These capture my attention without demanding it and they don’t wear me out, exactly what I was after
They already sound far better than they did in the demo and I have no room treatment. I asked GIK about taming reverb in my room (lots of angles in my ceiling and not much furniture) and the suggestion was to “start with” 12 panels on the ceiling and 4 on the side walls… not sure the 12 overhead are likely to happen but the room will be the next focus, even though I don’t necessarily have any significant (obvious) problems other than it being a bit lively.
Now back to the music - Les McCann trio live in NY sounding pretty spectacular right now!
Congratulations, are they new or do they have a few hours on them, if new I’m guessing they’ll only get better, the “boss” happy with colour choice
Thanks Paul, they have a few hours on them so settling in quickly. The boss is made up with them, they already gave her goosebumps and brought a tear to her eye, and that was nothing to do with getting them up to the 3rd floor
The colour fits perfectly with the decor. Elegant and understated but with a touch of character, quite stunning really.
I think what the boss is most happy with though is that we didn’t buy the JBL 4367 !
Congratulations! Please do post some photos
Thanks Bart, will take some in daylight tomorrow…
Congratulations @Elfer
You still have the NAP 300 as in your current profile? Do you feel that the 300 fully up to the job?
Hi @jsaudio. Yes I still have the 300 and driving them effectively was a concern of mine, I didn’t want it to just be “adequate”. I heard them with a pretty powerful Vitus amp (300w I think) and I can confirm the 300 has no less grip, drive or control and the performance is actually head and shoulders above what I heard in the demo (and that’s what sold me on them!). The 300 is not showing any signs of running warmer than usual, at my usual listening levels of around 75dB A average. I was listening for a while around 80dB average without issue but that’s about as loud as I ever play.
So, to answer your question yes, the 300 appears to be fully up to the job
Just replaced a 250DR with a 300DR to drive my Magico A3’s. The 250 was adequate, but the 300 is providing much better control for the A3’s. I would expect your 300 is more than up to the job!
We listened to a brand new pair of A3 being run in on massive Vitus SM 103 monoblocks and a Robert Koda preamp. I think you could say they were maxed out and they sounded incredible !
In situ ! Not the best light for photos, it was about to start snowing - we have gone straight from summer to winter here, Autumn didn’t happen !
That’s a serious listening room, and a nice home for the Magicos!
Gorgeous setup!
After a couple of hundred hours, the crossover should be completely “burned in” resulting in an even fuller and extremely detailed sound.
Apart from the M series these are the best speakers I’ve ever heard. They hit beyond their price range.
Thanks Thomas. I didn’t get to hear the M series unfortunately. I asked about the M2 and the dealer said he actually preferred the S5, he thought the M2 was just a bit too refined and lacked some of liveliness the S series was capable of.
I was tempted to extend our visit and listen to the S5 but decided it would be pushing the system a bit too far out of balance and would almost make adding a NAP500 compulsory. I may do one day but not yet…
