dear all. I’m new here. I have owned the highest of high end systems and have decided to quit as I’m getting on and I’m disabled. I don’t get the true benefit from it these days.
I’m settled, almost, on a Mu-so as a one box solution to work for what is now - background listening in the main.
A question about DSD. I committed a large vinyl collection to DSD 128 files using a SME 30/12a and TOTR TEAD phono stage/ Lyra cart. They are on a USB hard drive, played back via a Mac mini and also on old school USB sticks which fit directly into an old style USB socket.
Will the Mu-so play back these files natively? They are standard .dsf files. Sorry but I cannot find the answer as to how to get the information out of the speaker anywhere - my disability is akin to dementia.
When you say natively i guess you mean as a DSD file? I believe all naim dac’s convert DSD into pcm, so no it wont play them as a true DSD file. Hopefully i am correct on saying that, but the word natively prompted me. But it will play them.
I have a muso gen 1 that is used as a sound bar for the tv and also music in the family room, and for purpose it’s great.
Also sorry to hear that you have had to cut back on your music system, but i hope you can continue to enjoy music going forward.
Correct though by choice. All except the chips used in the NDS, and nDAC support native DSD but then you have to circumvent the DSP stage which Naim put a lot of effort into tuning. So this native DSD input is bypassed in favour of PCM and DSP.
I won’t say it’s right or wrong. It’s their design decision. Others have made the same. And others have gone for direct input.
The thing is that I’ve been listening to these files converted to Devialet’s 40 bit/384khz standard as the norm got decades. It’s equivalent to the vinyl in 99,9% of the way, I guess it’s now just a question of whether the downsampling of the NAIM would impact enjoyment for which we have no answer. A huge thanks though - seriously!!!
You can only try it.
You may prefer it, you may not or not notice any real difference.
The muso is going to be very different sounding anyway with whatever file you use.
I dont think i would let it worry me and thats my advice to you. Just use it and enjoy the music you have stored on these files.
Thanks. Sorry I have a form of dementia so forgot I posted. I know. I’m downsizing as I have a pair of £50k loudspeakers and if downsizing, it’s not really worth pursuing something that aspires to be something comparable really. The speakers, the JBL k29800 remain Paul Messenger’s favourites of all time and they have something I’ve never heard from anything else.
I’ve occasionally pondered if I had to down size to an aged-care home, could I be happy with both my “Mu-so2 with a Naim Core”.
The answer is “yes” as the Naim app provides a very simple and consistent interface to access internet radio as well as stored recordings from the Core. Together they both sound really good for “downsized listening” and still retains the Naim sound signature and is still foot tappingly enjoyable
DSD can be stored and replayed in this combo, with some Naim details listed in the following web link
