Must-see movies

Fun fact. His co-star, Olivia de Havilland, is still with us, aged 103. Wikipedia describes her as “now retired”

Not a movie but worth squeezing in here . A short award winning documentary on Netflix. Wow ..!!

MASH - Director Robert Altman’s irreverent black comedy from 1970. Set during the Korean War (1951) but with obvious parallels to the conflict in Vietnam at the time. In some ways over-shadowed by the hugely successful and long-running TV show (US TV 1972-83) which, while it continued many of the themes of the film, didn’t (IMV) get anywhere near the darkness of the original.

@bhoyo Saw 1917 last night, a very good film. Apart from the score, there is another interesting music component, for me at least. The beautiful song Wayfaring Stranger I had assumed was an original Tim Buckley song as it was the only version I had heard, but it seems to be an old American Folk song by an unknown composer, see the article attached.

I highly recommend the Tim Buckley live version sent through your Naim.

Thanks @JOF. I’ll listen to that later today, after my Valentine’s Day Indian lunch.

Eva Cassidy did a beautiful version of Wayfaring Stranger too.

I will check that out Steve. I also understand there is a Jonny Cash version too, I’ll have a little search for that.

Saw The Boy in the Striped Pajamas for first time yesterday, excellent.

Always stick to the original !
I would as well suggest it watch it in French (if needed with the subtitles).

Superb, unique film. Utterly original. A definite must-see.

Have just been to see this and I absolutely agree. So often you go and see an Oscar Best Picture winner and come away very disappointed. Not in this case. A brilliant black comedy but much more than that. Works on many levels and very nuanced. At times reminded me of ‘Shoplifters’. The twists are original and not predictable plus the film-making and cinematography are top notch. A firm recommendation

Told ya so

Saw David Copperfield this afternoon. Far superior to Ianucci’s Death Of Stalin.

Entirely agree

I watched this last night and really enjoyed it . Set in Berlin and shot in one take . Following an English speaking Spanish girl who bumps into 4 men on her way home from partying , things get a bit messy from there… Soundtrack by Nils Frahm .

I was chatting to someone studying Film at uni once and asked her fave movie of all time, her response, Fargo.

I went home and watched it, what a movie, funny, gruesome, and Frances McDormand is absolutely brilliant in it

One of my favourites. Being organist, I still have the unfulfilled wish to improvise a soundtrack for it.
