NAC 282 added to SN 2 .....for a home demo

…in terms of time on the forum I am a newbie and the few years that I have been here I have always found your comments regarding Naim gear as being spot on. You have always stepped up and given advice and shared your knowledge and I have found it to be helpful as I am sure others have as well. So I do appreciate you sharing your journey and knowledge with the rest of us.

I also appreciate the fact that you have over come some health obstacles and stay involved in life with your volunteer work at your local music gatherings and get out on the road and travel in your caravan… and other activities.

Nothing wrong with “sponsoring your own long-term demos,” when you can afford it.

The healthy used market for Naim, and reasonable residuals (for many if not all pieces) make experimenting through trading less extravagant than it sounds, at first.

Ok, after a few days of listening after adding the 250 DR there is definitely improvement in the sound. The soundstage has improved, the bass has more grip and the detail and clarity has improved. Still early days and more music and albums to be played… It is a keeper and will not be leaving that is for sure.

…as a side note there were a couple of piano pieces, no I cannot remember the album, but did catch my attention the percussion, detail, separation and decay in the notes just stood out and had not experienced anything like it with the SN 2. I always think I’m going to remember but at my age I should take notes but somehow I just keep smiling and listening.

Well, another side note, I would like to say that the SN 2 is a wonderful integrated amp and brought nothing but joy. If the time comes and I need to move back to a smaller box count I would not hesitate to go back to a Naim Integrated amp.

When adding a 282 or 250 DR to a SN 2, I do not truthfully know which would bring the biggest improvement. I added the 282 first and the detail and improvement was immediately evident and profound. If the 250 DR was added first the impact may have been the same. However when the 250 DR came the SN 2 left with dealer and no testing was preformed with the SN2 Pre with the 250 DR.

So if others head that way in future they may have the opportunity to test both at a dealer’s shop once everything opens back up. I know adding the pre-amp to the SN 2 was very worthwhile and a positive impact for me.

…so for now I’m going to keep on playing music and let the 250 DR settle in to the system and do an update down the road.

One last side note, my wife asked that I do not take the rack any higher, she likes the look of the fireplace with only a four stack in front. So I will be looking for two smaller isolation platforms to place a HiCap DR and two NAPSC’s. One for each side of the rack, so let me know if you have any suggestions/recommendations. Thanks…

I’d never point to anything being a sweet spot. It will differ from person to person, and the sweet spot is surely that which makes you happy with your music. Back in the day, when hifi was more important to me and my ears worked properly, my 552/300 was absolutely superb and a total delight. These days the integrated fits the bill. Different times, different fits with my life. The 282/250 is a nice mid point of great performance at a relatively sensible price - though whether over £10,000 is sensible in the real world is another matter.

Yes, guilty as charged sweetie. A bit like Pete, moving to part time work, a great used offer and it was achievable to have a system above what I thought I’d ever achieve and be set up for good whilst I have the income to pay for it, It’s my only expensive hobby and I expect it will see me through until downsizing

I remember your last thread on the differences between 282 and 252 @trickydickie .
I didn t compared 250 and 300 but I remember that you considered the 300 better by far.
In this context I remember that 252 and sc to you sounded as a diminutive return nd probably it would be the same in my setup
My goal is to reach 282 with 2hcdr and in this configuration the 300 it is very tempting

Unfortunately not. It’s been on order for over 3 months now and it’s now not looking likely to be provided before my dealers license for selling Naim expires at the end of the month. If I then want a new one, it will be through a new dealer and back to the end of the queue unless they can get stock from Australia. I might just stay with using the SN2 as a power amp or wait for a good used one.

It’s pretty sad prospect for Naim in NZ. I made sure to get my existing stuff serviced while Chris is still doing it…. Real have been great to deal with since I started my Naim journey.
