NAC 282 added to SN 2 .....for a home demo

A few threads lately talking about the 282 and SN 2 and all the positive comments had me email my dealer about a demo a few weeks ago. One became available and he dropped by and did an install an hour ago. First impressions are positive… First comments from wife was it sounds much clearer, which was very nice since she wears hearing aides. Clarity, detail and separation, wider sound stage, better bass are my first impressions from listening to the first album. (Patricia Barber’s ‘Café Blue’). I’m looking forward to the next week or so to run through some albums.

I truly wanted to stick with a four box system but a six box system may be in my future. (I am old enough to know to never make any permanent plans).

…and of course a 250 DR may appear in the future if I keep the 282 but that would be months from now. If at all… he says laughing.

Enjoy the demo — I fear your planned retirement system won’t survive the coming week…

Lovely looking system and a gorgeous looking room.

I have a 282 but am not entirely convinced by it.

I think it might be interesting to try the Supernait analogue out to a 250DR (without the 282).

Hi @seakayaker, this is going to be an interesting week ahead for you and I am sure that you will end up playing more music than you expected to.

What surprises me is that your dealer put the 282 where he did, and I wonder why it is not on the shelf next to the NDX2 to place it further away from the XPSDR?

Yes, indeed. This is how I have my similar set up:

It’s also very interesting running the pre through the SN as a power amp, as it really reveals how much the pre is contributing to the overall sound presentation.

…right now I am hearing a positive uplift between the preamp section of the SN 2 and the 282. There may be a benefit to the SN2 preamp in to a 250 DR but I believe I am past looking into that after listening to a couple of albums with the 282 feeding the power section of the SN2.

A very positive finding, but it shows how odd hi-fi is - you’d simply not expect a pre-amp feeding an integrated amp to improve upon connecting the source directly to the Supernait.

From memory when people have queried sending audio directly from streamers to NAPs, which is feasible, the addition of a NAC as expected/intended is better.

This is mine, different front end / back end, I did the 250DR first, preamp will be next and I prefer the SN2 on the top… So not the same at all

However, I am 100% sure a preamp change is a going to be a great upgrade.

Yes, I’m sure that you are past that point. I’ve had my setup for a few days now, and there have been many wow moments, adding the pre in on its own is really quite a big step up. I think that as you have the NDX2 and XPS DR, you really have a solid foundation that you are building from as well. Happy days.

@GeoffC @Mike_S …I will mention that to him and will definitely reposition if I keep it. I will also be adding another shelf and from top to bottom it would then be, top to bottom, NDX 2 > NAC 282 > SN 2 > HiCap DR / NAPSC > XPS DR.

I’m also getting a NAC282 to replace my SN3, so really interested to hear your impressions. To keep boxes down to four I am getting ATC active speakers too.

In other news, as a slight diversion, I bought fold up wheels for my kayak, so I can use it more often. I’ll wheel it down the road to the little beach, instead of being limited to having the trailer empty.

I can appreciate that… My 17.5 foot fiberglass seakayak from the early 90’s weighs in at 60+ pounds. It used to be easy to toss on and off the car single handed now requires an assist from another. This aging stuff takes some getting used to and we have to be smarter how we work and play as we age.

Once on the water its pretty effortless moving through the water…

282 on top with NDX next worked best for me. You’re going to need a new fireplace!

as I wrote in a recent thread (NAC 282 + SN2 or NAP 200?) that was my upgrade path, too. Adding NAC 282 to SN2 was a terrific inprovement; but finally, yesterday for instance, swapping SN2 for a NAP 250DR was a further step in terms of bass control, transparency and driving capacity. where the SN2 as power amp seemed to show its limits in power control, the NAP 250DR easily drives speakers at higher volume levels without any effort. the final result is really satisfying!

Wow! Please keep us informed on your demo @seakayaker I thought you were through (famous last words). I’m considering separates as well but I’m targeting an amp first then pre-amp

Thanks for your comments.

I followed your recent thread and the experience’s that you shared helped influence my decision to move forward with the demo of the NAC 282. I plan on moving slower before bring a 250 DR onboard.

Time and patience, yes time and patience… and the money…
