Naim CDX 2.2 needs love

Happy 2026…well mostly

I have a CDX 2.2 (2017 date) that started to skip portions of songs. Like micro skipping, not in the same position though. If I rewind - that portion plays, and other parts don’t.

I have tried everything - leveling the CD Player, bought a new puck from local Naim dealer. Placed it on a isoacoustics table, even bought a brand new CD.

I have seen a bunch of posts on this forum - and wanted to know what my options were today. Apologies in advance for creating a new topic!

@Richard.Dane - would you have some advice or suggestions for me? I live in Seattle, WA (USA).

Thank you in advance for your help. I’ll go back to listening to my vinyl, till the CDP behaves :joy:Cheers.

Have you cleaned the spindle and lens with iso propyl alcohol with a Q tip, cheap and worth a try.

It sounds like you’ve done most things possible thus far. Are there any odd noises coming from the mech when it tries to play? I ask because sometimes the little ribbon connector on the laser sled of the VAM1202 can catch.

Have you tried putting the player into soak mode? Place a disc that you know is clean and perfect in the drawer, replace the clamp, close the drawer. Switch off the player. Then switch back on while holding down the play button on the front. This puts the player into soak mode where it will play the disc on repeat and will count any errors it encounters. If the disc is perfect any errors will indicate an issue with the mech.

Thanks @Richard.Dane - no weird sounds coming when I insert a clean disc. Just the sound of the laser trying to read the disc - and perhaps the gears - tracking the laser back and forth to read the # of songs (my guess).

I just tried your ‘soak‘ method and it’s now playing a brand new cd of Billie Eilish - Happier than Ever! There is a blinking ‘0’

Screenshot of progress. Am I on the right track to diagnose?

@Gazza -I hadn’t tried that - it did cross my mind to see if a cleaner would help. Any chances of damaging the lens?

If not, I’ll give that a shot once the soak cycle completes.

Provided it keeps at 0 the the mech is fine. Keep it playing in soak mode for a few hours.

Be careful of trying to clean the lens. it can do more harm than good. It should be a last resort only. If the player stays at 0 in soak mode then it’s good and no cleaning should be necessary.

:folded_hands:t3: Sir ! Super appreciate it. I’ll let it cycle through for a few hours, and report back.

Yes, last resort as Richard says, and only sparingly with the alcohol, not too much pressure either.

Got it! That’s why I was hesitant doing anything. Will wait for soak results and bother you again! Thank you both of you!l for your help.

I just realized - my cables are a mess in the back . I have been rebuilding an old Mid-Century cabinet to house the Naim gear. And it’s been a process!

It’s slowly coming together - Its a tight fit - I have ordered some custom metal shelf brackets to help create more space :joy: .

Track 6 - still zero errors. :crossed_fingers:t3:

@Richard.Dane - the cd played through once - about 57 mins - zero errors. I’ll let it keep going for a few more hours.

I should have added - the only variable this morning, is that I placed the CDX 2 on the wooden floor. Previously, I have played it sitting on top of the DAC/SN3 stack  .

Any further thoughts?

Do you mean sitting directly on top, ie, as a stack of three boxes?

Chris

Yes, then moved on too of a rack shelf. I’ve been rebuilding the cabinet.

I’m hoping the rack shelf might solve it.

@Richard.Dane , 90 mins in - 1 error reported.

OK, that could mean the mech is starting to fail but here I would defer to the expertise of @NeilS. Leave it going over night and see what it says in the morning. IIRC it will count up to 10 errors after which it will stop.

Thanks @Richard.Dane - I really appreciate your help to troubleshoot. The counts up to 2. I’ll wait for @NeilS .

I few things spring to mind here - all of which fall outside of the scope of this forum (under DIY fixes), so unfortunately I won’t be able to assist troubleshooting further.

Reduced laser diode output (oscilloscope required to check).

Lack of lubrication, or detritus in the sled worm gear.

Failing sled motor.

Having said the above - worth inspecting the disc platter carefully for any radial cracks. Although this issue usually manifests different symptoms.

Regards

Neil.
