Naim CDX 2.2 needs love

Yes, I believe Philips haven’t made them for many years, so it’s all a bit “Wild West” these days.

I’ve got a CDX 2.2 as well and love what it does. However recently bought a Denon DCD1700NE to replace a dead Rega in another system and its got a fabulous build quality and the sound has all the body that a CDX2.2 has, plus if can play SACD’s.

The Absolute Sound & HiFi News have online reviews for it that are glowing, its a stunning modern player which in the UK is available for a very competitive price given the performance on offer, maybe its available at a similar rate in your region?

Sorry - just number 1.

Buy a complete VAM1202 (perhaps of dubious quality) and carefully pop the platter (spinny bit) off.

This can then be transplanted on to your player. It must be done correctly, with the right glue and the height is critical.

Hopefully your chosen dealer will have experience with the job.

Neil.

That’s comforting - hopefully easier to solve . thank you!

Hi @NeilS - I found a couple of Vam 1202/12 Mechs on EBay. Sharing some pictures of one that feels

@Richard.Dane hopefully, I am not breaking any community forum protocols by posting these  . These all mostly seem to come from China. If it’s a platter issue, the actual mech might not matter. Cheers

Last evening, we rescued a cat and brought him home. He is doing really well. After much conversation as a family, we are adopting him. He is adjusting really well!

This made me reconsider our decisions in life - my wife and I talked about great length - how this simple gesture could apply to an ailing CDX2 - maybe it’s ok to be not perfect. Life isn’t perfect, if it skips here and there - maybe we adjust and recalibrate our expectations.

I appreciate all the feedback here - what a community this is, in my years of listening to music - I have never experienced a community so special and caring!

I spoke with my dealer and we’ll pursue reasonable solutions.

Cheers!

Provided it’s not really poorly moulded then it should be fine to take the platter from that.

p.s. to ensure rules are adhered to I had to remove the second image as it showed the seller details.

p.p.s. Best of luck with the adoption!

As said - questionable quality, I’d say the platter in the photo is set fractionally too high. Not that it will matter, as it would be a donor unit.

Love the cat story!

Thanks @Richard.Dane

@NeilS - I found one more post - that caught my eye. It’s listed as ‘Philips & Marantz OEM VAM1201 VAM1202 CDM12.1 CDM12.2 Optical P/U 271K304560 356K304500 Original Philips Part!’ - seller claims the ribbon has the Philips logo - maybe better quality?

Easy enough for me to say, but the prices of these parts are such that if you have to buy a few of them to get it working, it’s a small price to pay. There are not that many cd players can touch your one when it is working well.

Good luck in your search! I have a CD5i and a CD5XS and I love playing CDs and I love their musicality. The only thing is that every time I think I hear a little odd noise or skip, I automatically assume they’re done for!

Now that Naim are no longer supporting these players (and I totally get why) is this something the forum could take a lead on? There must be a wealth of experience and knowledge of this on here. I am sure @ankurrius isn’t the first and won’t be the last. I am asking @Richard.Dane really if we might be allowed to create a resource here where those of us that are prepared to take the risk, share where we got good mechs from (and conversely where to avoid) and where we got them fitted (assuming we can’t do it ourselves) so that we can keep these beloved players going for as long as possible?

I hate to say it most all are like that - no guarantee of higher quality.

A note about the mech itself - Naim modify it and fit a shroud. I don’t know whether Naim supply these separately or not but the fitment of this shroud is critical. Get it a fraction of a mm wrong and it will lift slightly and foul the disc leaving a trail of polycarbonate dust and sometimes making a nasty noise too.

Mark, I can see the appeal, but really, quite apart from the obvious issues here, it’s beyond the scope of this forum and what allows it to exist.

Not even controlled in a FAQ thread? People must have done it successfully (and I am sure people have failed) but I can’t think of a better place for this repository of knowledge to exist. Buyer beware and all that. I just hate to have to throw my players away when the inevitable happens. It pains me to the core as a true Yorkshireman!

The problem is that supply is so hit or miss, it risks misleading more than informing, and that’s just the start of the issues..

But if you have to try 5 or 6 of them, it may be a pain in the …ss, and also a risk to damage something else.

But if its not working, nothing to lose, yes buying several would be a pain. But, if you got a few more years out of it?

Yes, I agree. Worth a try. If not, doorstep.

Name of your new adopted cat? Clearly comfortable and reasonably confident.. some rescue cats hide away and sleep and lurk for the first few weeks in a new home with thier confidence gradually building .. depending on the environment they have come from.

He looks gorgeous.
