The proportions of the BD Naims somehow remind me of a Peters projection map – familiar and strange at the same time
Well, that’s NAP 250 number six in the bag… Just got to sort out stands and cabling… and the extension…
Six-Pack StackI got a six pack and nothing to do
I got a six pack and I don’t need you
(Quick question - do you find the LPSU makes a difference with the Topping DAC - I have just added a DX3 PRO to my system?)
In the dusty study…all recently serviced at HQ…not in photo, however speakers are Royd Eden on Kan stands…
Yes, it makes a little difference, although I prefer running it with a 5-volt battery for pure DC…
Turn the sleeve round on the NATPS… it’s playong havoc with my OCD!!!
Me too, Mr Naim fitted the sleeve wrong, got 2 out of 3 right - will change it around when I dust it…
Really? I assumed you, somehow, preferred it that way. Yes, it’s an easy fix. But…
Prefer the CB, or… could try all 3 as ‘black’ …
Happy to see another aficionado of the gold / black livery!
Gold logo / chrome bumper is a bit of a dilemma…
I have posted this elsewhere but felt like the pictures were dwindling on this thread.
Been using a serviced 32.5/CB160 in the study for a bit - for complicated reasons I won’t go into. Does anyone else find this combo has a slightly accentuated bass and maybe a bit over damped (this is with Kans so it’s definitely not the speaker ). It doesn’t seem as natural as the 12/BD160, 42.5/110 or Nait. It’s like it’s adding more of its own character to the low end. I think the CB160 is the main culprit here. The 250 is sometimes criticised for ‘rubber band’ bass and that’s probably a good description for what I’m hearing.
The NAP160 has many fond followers. Has your amp been serviced? If so was it Salisbury, Sheffield or a third party.
Not heard a 160 myself, my 72 feeds a 140, both serviced and sounding great.
But I know 2 who have ( serviced) 160s and love them. To the point neither liked a 250 when they tried it.
I’ve had it for a year or so and also love it so I’m not about to sell it on. And yes, Darran serviced it about a year ago. Just wondered what ‘Team CB’ thought
Edit: think I know what is bothering me now. It’s a kind of squashed over damped quality across the whole spectrum. I think Kan 1s make it more obvious. Notes dont ring out as long as I expect them too. I may not have noticed with my Kan 2s cos they end notes more abruptly anyway. I’d always rated the CB160 above the 110 but with Kan 1s at least I’d have to switch them around.
Never felt that about the 160, just that the bass was more organic and extended than a similar age 250. I moved the 250 on, it always felt a if it had no ‘class’ in comparison. I also had a very early 110 that was wonderful and preferred to the 250.
Thanks TC. I suspect it’s more of a Kan 1 thing. I’d always slightly preferred the 160 in the past.
Hi Richard
I have a nait 2 running a pair of nSats all fronted by LP 12 - a small room system which works well. The nait is the excellent having been serviced a few years ago at NAIM HQ in Salisbury, I’ll never part ways with it.
However if I wanted a bit more grunt in the shoe box way , is the 62/110 the classic combo ?
I think in the good old days I did have a 42/110 at some stage but the grey matter is starting to fade
Many thanks for your views Richard
Bevo
Bevo, if you want more grunt than the NAIT2 can give but still want the shoe-box form then the NAC42/62 and NAP110/NAP140 are a great step up in power. Between the pre-amps, it’s really a case of whether you want the extra input of the NAC62. I would probably avoid a very early short-chassis NAC42, but the later ones and the latest NAC42.5s can sound very good. At this point as much is down to individual variance, age, service history etc… as anything else. If you want more facilities and inputs then there’s the NAC32.5 to consider as well.
Of the power amps, I marginally favour the NAP110 - a honey of an amp. The usual caveats apply re age, service history etc…
Of course, if you want Olive then it’s a NAC62/NAP140, with the NAc72 being a higher priced alternative pre-amp.
I wouldn’t agonise too much deciding on one model over another, just go for the nicest you can find.
