Naim Discontinue Active Systems..?

Graham, of course I know the qualities of a pair of 135 compared to nap 250, obviously on big speakers like Linn Dms/Pms or B&W 802 a pair of 135 is superior to a single 250, for this reason as my friend, after 1 nap 250 in the evolution of things it is logically a pair of 135 that had replaced the 250. Then the passage in passive bi-amplification with 2xnap 250 then 3x250 in passive tri-amplification on Linn Iso Pms. In my humble opinion, the tri-amp-passive has no problem with the tri-active that I also use.
According to my own impressions, I find that the active in addition to the ma brings an advantage on the Low frequencies and Low Medium, the passive filtering with the bi or tri-amplification expresses itself freely while remaining perfectly homogeneous and expressive. without denying the benefits of the active; but I also find, according to the combinations, that the passive multi-amplification can have beautiful assets.

Well, going active with 6xNAP135CB with Briks is an experience worth the extra all the trouble cables, boxes etc etc caused. Interesting note is that 362 delivered better SQ then 3-6 in this old school setup (both recapped by Naim)

Yes NAT01 with RS G17 is marvellous, live broadcast beats vinyl

I have no acoustic phenomenons knowledge, just can relate my experience. I had a big boos cabinet between my speakers before, and when I removed it, it was night and day. But as you said, your room and speakers are different.

Unless the broadcast is of a record!

But, yes, not much beats the sound that BBC Radio 3 regularly achieve at concerts from London’s Royal Festival Hall, Symphony Hall in Birmingham, or wherever.

I always choose to listen to the NewYear’s Day concert from Vienna ‘live’ in the morning on Radio 3, then catch up with the TV highlights shown in the evening on BBC 2.

Sadly, I don’t think that I’ll achieve that on the first day of next month, as my NAT-01 is in Salisbury being serviced. But I won’t be missing much, as the Vienna Philharmonic have unaccountably invited Herr Frankly-Worse-Than-Most back to conduct the concert.

Maybe I must clearify my English; with live broadcast I mean broadcast “as it happens right now” with as analogue technology as ever possible
However even a record sounds fantastic!

After nearly 5 years of 135s into easy to drive Keilidhs, thinking about going active is not something that occurs to me at all these days. I consign those thoughts to youthful exuberance and lust for the 6 pack back in the eighties.

I went active with Kudos Titan 606 after attending a Kudos active demonstration at Cymbiosis a few years ago.

Had to add another NAP 250, SNAXO 242, another SimRack level and an additional run of NAC A5. I powered the SNAXO with the FlatCap I had at the time.

It did make a significant improvement from being passive.

Since then, the FlatCap has been swapped out with a SuperCap.

I do like the active sound, with more detail and a deeper, controlled bass.

Can I ask, what needs to change to make a SNAXO suitable for 606s as opposed to say SL2s or SBLs? Is it just a few components or is there more to it? I have a SNAXO, and I’m just thinking out loud….

I would be surprised if its not somewhere between ‘nothing’ and ‘a few resistors’.

Maybe one for @NeilS - if @Richard.Dane does not know…

I have no idea. One for Naim service.

@IanRobertM and @Richard.Dane

Thank you for the replies!

I think @NeilS is the man for this one…!!

For a homogeneous result, it is interesting to remember that the active system requires attention with the use of the same generation of amplifiers; this was even more necessary with the Naxo and Snaxo 2-4 and 3-6 designed for vertical active operation (one double channel amplifier per 2-way speaker + one in 3-way for the Tweeters). With the Snaxo 242 and 362 the horizontal amplification mode simplified the installation of active systems. However with 6 nap 135 the respect of the same amp generation remains more sensitive than nap 300 and nap 250, as well as a potential proximity of the six transformers and links including the AC.

The differences between the standard Snaxo & the Titan are not insignificant. I converted one recently, a component level job would be fairly labour intensive & a board swap is preferred.

I’m getting confused now. I have only ever heard of a SNAXO being used with a Naim or a Linn loudspeaker, but there seems to be discussion here of its use with a Titan loudspeaker, which I don’t think is made by Naim or Linn.

Kudos - the Titan 505s, 606s, 707s and 808s can also be run active. I think they have a couple of non titans that can also go active

Naim did SNAXO for Audiovector too.

Thanks, and a belated Merry Christmas!

I did not know that. Thank you.
