Naim Internet Radio - Feedback & Requests - Part 15

A repeat of the opening post from Part 1:

At Naim, we understand that while many people use our products to get the best listening experience from their own music collection; sometimes you simply want to put the radio on and let someone else choose. We’ve offered a comprehensive internet radio solution for some time, and we are now delighted to announce the launch of our own in-house internet radio solution.

In a collaboration between XPeri and our team here at Naim, we have brought the internet radio server in-house to be maintained internally, as opposed to relying on a third party as with the previous server. This will improve reliability and has opened up a host of improvements to the service, detailed below:

- A selection of over 45,000 stations worldwide
- Advanced metadata feeds for artist, track and album info on many stations
- Focus on high-quality audio streams
- Improved station categorisation
- High-resolution station artwork
- Automated station scanning
- Station podcasts (where available)

The Focal & Naim app will identify any favourites and presets that should be resaved to use the new server.

These updates are not only improving the internet radio server but improving our streaming capabilities too. TIDAL’s new 24-bit, 192 kHz streaming tier, TIDAL Max, is now available through both the Focal & Naim app and TIDAL Connect.

In a significant update for our Chinese customers, Q-Play is now supported in Naim products. QQ Music is one of the largest music streaming services in China, and users are now able to select their Naim streamer from within the QQ Music app for a seamless listening experience.

Regards,
Naim Audio – Software team

With the launch of Naim’s new Internet Radio service (see above), I’ve created this dedicated thread where information can be posted relating to the service and members can post feedback and requests for the team at HQ.

Examples of how this thread can be used;

  • Announcements on key new stations / station rebrands etc. For example recently a big change in UK for Bauer Media and Global. Scala radio rebrands to Magic Classical and about 16 other new or existing stations changing.
  • request stations that we don’t have.
  • issues with a station. Eg, wrong meta / won’t play and so on.
  • notifications of any downtime on either our system in a given region, or a dependent system like the xperi live radio meta.
  • Search issues. We have the station but its hard to find as needs more tags.
  • feature requests / feedback / general radio gossip

Please ensure posts here are ONLY feedback re. the new Naim radio service or station requests. Thanks.

The latest January Update can be read here:

Hi

Happy New Year! :slightly_smiling_face:

I have noticed that one of my favorites polish radios „PR3-Trójka” does not work today. When I selected this radio station and prezes „play” It showed in the F&N app something like „Error- station not accessible”.

I have Naim muso gen 1, software version 2.1.10. I listen to this radio couple of days ago, but I must admit it is very unstable for about a year, (same as radio „Radio 357”), so unfortunately I am not satisfied with the level of service Naim provides when it comes to the internet radio. I honestly do not see the improvement you mentioned a year ago.

Could you Please check and support on these issues?

I am pretty sure this is not the internet connection issue as in the same time other sations (including polish ones like „Chillizet”) are working fine-when at the same time one or both of the ones mentioned above do not.

Regards,

Jarek

Hi Jarek,

As of late 31st December, Polskie Radio’s legacy mp3 servers went offline. At this moment in time we’re unsure if they have just failed, or they’ve discontinued them.

We do offer the modern hls/aac stream (which is categorised as the HD stream) and that is working fine, so suggest for now retune to that.

We’ll contact Polskie and see if the mp3 streams will return or not and then update the system accordingly. On older products they are better to stay on the mp3/non hls streams.

Best

Steve

Hi @Jarekp

The Polskie radio MP3 streams are back up as of around 1200 UK time (2nd Jan 26). We wrote to them yesterday informing them that they had some server issues.

Steve

Hi @Stevesky ,

Thanks a lot for your response and for your support!

I confirm, it is now available. And I see it is using this “HLS” as you mentioned.

The problem is that it is breaking. Like every 10-15 seconds it stops for 1-5 seconds. After my quick debugging I have found that this is kind or correlated with the buffer droping below 100% (70-90).

What can be the reason for that one? I do not observe it on other stations?

and btw, I see there are 2 “PR3-Trojka” available - regular one and HD, and I am using the first one (without HD) as the other one simply does not work at all.

Regards,

Jarek

Hi @Jarekp

Their servers hosting the mp3 streams are going up and down by the hour, indicating they are doing engineering work on them.

Think a case have to wait until they fix them.

I’ll keep an eye on the scanner results to see when it stabilises.

Hi @Stevesky

I think I managed to post during the down time (happy holidays!). Wondering if you were able to see my post re: BBC Radio 6 feeds?

Original question here.

Thanks very much.

Hi @Stevesky,

Sure let’s monitor the situation.

What I can tell you so far is that I have checked on the smartphone app „Radio FM” and there is available the station „PR3-Trójka” as mp3 stream (at least that is what is displayed there) and there is no any issues(breaks in Signal ) while in exactly the same time on my Naim muso there are quite frequent issues (couple of seconds breaks/silence) making it annoying and impossible to listen to.

Have a nice weekend!

Regards,

Jarek

Hi @Jarekp

Checked this morning and quite a few of the Polskie Radio on mp3 streams are back up, Trójka is still down on legacy stream. So url:

http://stream3.polskieradio.pl:8954/;

They also have a misconfiguration on their server where they enforce a http to https upgrade, but then have no ssl certificate so it fails.

Overall, more waiting needed while Polskie Radio get their systems back online fully.

On our newer products (2018+) they play the HLS AAC stream as intended so no issues. It’s just on older products that need to use the legacy streams.

Best

Steve

Hi @Jarekp

The Polskie station as discussed above seems to be working again.

Steve

Hi @Stevesky ,

yes, it is working now!

I see now they are using AAC instead of HLS but I don’t care about that.

Thank you so much for your great support @Stevesky !

Jarek

Hi @mookr

Re: your BBC question as asked in last years feedbavk thread:

I noticed you’re based in the USA so the BBC streams will be the 96kbit HLS/AAC ones from BBC World, rather than the BBC UK geolocation streams.

In the radio directory we show the best case rate as it’s the BBC’s servers that make the final decision of what the end listener gets. We can request HD but due to geolocation the BBC can downgrade accordingly,

In the case of the built in radio player in the app it indicates there is a small bug there. Primarily on now playing it’s showing the best case value, not the actual stream bit rate being delivered. Example from iOS app:

However lets sniff the low level comms :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

It’s being delivered 96kbit stream.

I’ll raise a Jira to the apps team on the above subject.

Apologies on the false hope that you had gained 320kbit BBC streams in the USA, sadly not.

Steve

Hi @Stevesky Many thanks for digging in - I appreciate the details and explanations; makes sense.

Hi @bertrand

Last year we added a transcoded wav link of Naim Radio using the ‘Kurt’s Proxy’.

For over 2 weeks this proxy has not been working. We have no way to resolve if it’s just changed address or he’s decided to shut it down.

If you have any details on this, then if you can let us know that will be much appreciated.

we typically give stations a down-time grace of 1-2months depending on who they are then delete if it’s going no-where.

Steve

Hi @Stevesky

Thanks for information.

I noticed, exactly 2 weeks ago, his “website” giving the list of FLAC radio he added was not reachable.

So, I pretended to connect into my ND5XS and, fortunately, all my “added stations” coming from Kurt were available and I did listen to some of them that week-end and I was confident …

Then, I read you message :frowning:

I just boot my ND5XS and all Kurt’s added stations were not reachable anymore. Siiighhh …

I retrieved the corresponding conversation in your search engine tool with “IRADIO FLAC” and found all the messages all of us in “Native Flac via iRadio”, including Kurt, had at that time.

I also retrieved his profile, so I added him in this current topic.

@Kurt

Hello Kurt. I hope this message will reach you and find you well.

I am @Bertrand from North of France, close to Kortrijk, and we had some discussions together in the “Native Flac via iRadio” topic …

May you please be so kind to read @Stevesky message and give us an answer ?

It seems your proxy server is not working anymore. Do you confirm ?

Do you have any information to provide to us ?
I am very upset not being able to hear native Flac from my ND5XS.
I really appreciated your proxy server from 2021, almost 5 years …

If you read this message, thanks a lot to take some time to answer

@Stevesky

Searching in the web allows me to find private Kurt’s email address.
I will send him a mail and we’ll see.
You, as “Naim admin”, may be you also are able to check his mail from his Naim’s profile and join him if you want ?

I think so far that’s all I can do and really hope it will help !

@Kurt and @Stevesky , we keep the faith !

Yours,

Bertrand

Hi All,

Well, what basically happened is the following: FWP is running on a free Oracle Cloud Infrastructure instance since something like 5 years. Recently I decided to upgrade the Linux OS on that instance. This went wrong and I lost my boot volume. I fixed this, but the downside is that I couldn’t recover my public IP address anymore. So, now, FWP is running, but has a different IP address.

This address should do it: http://92.5.94.248:9001/fwp/status

I guess @Stevesky has to change the IP address on the Naim radio station server?

My apologies for this!

Cheers,
Kurt

@Stevesky

Now we got clear answer from @Kurt , I do hope you will register his list of Flac radios from his new proxy.

I do confirm http://92.5.94.248:9001/fwp/stations is new list of Flac stations from Kurt !

If yes, I will be able to access again. Great !

If no, I will loose a very confortable listening feature. Bad ! :sob:

Anyway, let’s see !

Have all an excellent week-end !

Bertrand

Hi @Bertrand

We update the Naim radio link a week ago, but on stations that we don’t own, as this proxy breaks Geolocation licensing rules we can’t add them to the directory. For example, Mother Earth Radio is not licensed to play in USA and is blocked there, but via this proxy it appears that the listener is in Germany and will play.

Of course what people want to do on their custom added stations is up to them

Best

Steve

Hello @Stevesky

Thanks for feed-back.

I understand I can retrieve the Naim flow now.

I suppose I can find it under same previous location, North Korea ? I will check later, so far not at home …

I also for sure understand your constraints.

But I have an easy question :

Is it possible for you to add ALL of your Naim stations from Kurt’s FLAC repository ?

I guess Naim for Naim will not be an issue, flowing through another proxy

On my side, I also used to listen to all Hi-on-line and all Radio Paradise stations from Kurt’s FLAC list …

Do you think there will be a constraint to add them from Kurt’s list ?

Last, sorry for this, but I don’t know how to change my added stations by myself direct from my ND5XS, I suppose it’s not possible because neither ND5XS menu nor App allows me to do anymore after Vtuner outage :sob:

That means if you don’t record new @Kurt list somewhere, I cannot access through your list …

Thanks again and hope to read good news from you !

Yours,

Bertrand
