Naim’s Planned Obsolescence

That’s why I included the word ‘generally’

It also helps if

  1. Is it funny?

And surely
5. Is it interesting (to some if not all)?

I would put #3 first.

It’s interesting. In my experience it’s those who repeatedly post about the need to be nice that turn out to be the most nasty. People like to get in their pulpit and preach, yet behave unkindly towards others. Please note that I’m absolutely not including you in that, merely reflecting on my experience here.

Sorry but I have to support the OP’s comments here. Thankfully I have just managed to revive my old dog of a Uniti so it lives another day but I don’t think I should have been put in that situation in the first place.

In our kitchen we paid a premium for our appliances because they are designed to last for two decades and, if they go wrong, a tech can be booked to sort the problem out and that is what we pay extra for; our Naim system isn’t cheap tat from Curry’s - they cost many thousands of pounds and yes, we do expect them to ‘just work!’ Even our turntable is over fifty years old!

This saga has really upset us because our sound system is a central part of our home and our lives. We are pleased that the firmware upgrade has led to an improvement in sound quality, but that hasn’t been enough to mollify us. We are still very angry and we have lost confidence in the Naim brand.

I’m afraid that this will be the last time we go through this process. Any loss of functionality in the future will, I’m afraid, mean we will move to another manufacturer/brand.

What loss of functionality did you have?

I bought my QB MK1 from Currys’s.

Came with 6 months free Deezer subscription, which was bizarre as the QB can’t stream from Deezer.
The good news was, I was able to use Deezer with my squeeze box touch, which was actually officially obsolete at the time.

Oops! lol
My apologies!

I too was annoyed during the vTuner fiasco, but am now very pleased with Naim’s resolution of the issue. It took some time, but the fact that I have been able to use the new internet radio service on my QB1, which cost just a few hundred pounds, actually increases my confidence in Naim.

Interesting to compare with my Auralic streamer, which did cost thousands, and also had, still has in fact, vTuner issues. As a result I can’t select BBC radio in the UK. Auralic have not provided any effective resolution and my confidence in the brand has certainly not increased.

Auralic accepts the web addresses, which sound better than the sounds app.

In all fairness, it was vTuner, not NAIM that were the problem. Having said that, NAIM put themselves in the position of being at the mercy of a third party, which didn’t work out too well for them.

And what guarantees will this other manufacturer give you that their products will continue to work forever and not be affected by any future technical changes?

Whoever makes a streamer today has no control over the continuation of; Amazon music, Apple Music, tidal, Spotify, deezer, qobuz, roon etc etc any of which could stop at any time. None of this is forever.
Original uniti, hdx, ndx these are all computers that at some point will reach end of life. That Naim were able to squeeze the new radio service into a unitiqute or superuniti or unitilite is to be applauded. But they can’t magic a “3D” board out of thin air if the chipset is obsolete.
Even the supernait 3 can no longer be made, but Naim will support it for as long as possible. All the old chrome bumper and olive amps can still be serviced today.

How old is your 'obsolete ’ Naim kits DaveS ?

But moaning about Naim products being ‘obsolete’ or ‘bricked’ is so much more fun than sticking to reality and solid facts…:roll_eyes:

Absolutely true but (sorry), customers must be told that’s the case AT THE TIME so they can make an informed decision.

It may seem obvious to people in the know, and regulars on the forum, but I suggest that people who buy the leisure type Naim products won’t be anywhere near as well informed. If I bought a Uniti for radio in the kitchen and then one day it just didn’t work, then I can see how I could be quite concerned.

For a lot of companies this is new(ish) territory and new dependencies they need to get their head around.

Whilst I wholly agree with you that suppliers should clarify which of the advertised services are at sunject to the whim of other companies and that whilst the best will be done to maintain service it cannot be guaranteed, I wonder how many other hifi companies provide such a disclaimer, ans how prominently, in their pre-sales blurb?
