Nait 1 serviced (or not)

This…

… Looks suspiciously like a non Naim sanctioned service. The spots on the board are blowback from a solder vacuum. You should never clear the bore over the board you are working on and certainly not leave the specs behind. I don’t think Naim or Class A would ever make either of those mistakes.

Yes.

I suspect when the axial capacitors were replaced, that the old cap legs weren’t desoldered from the underside of the board.
They were left in place, with the body of the cap removed from the legs from above.
Body of new cap soldered to the original legs. :weary_cat:

Or maybe they are just rough looking capacitors.

Hopefully, by now, the OP has got the message to get his nait serviced at Salisbury or Sheffield. Any bodges from a previous “ service” will be put right and the nait restored to design. It is a simple message and one most forum members would give, based on experience.

Not wishing to hijack the thread but still on track - does this early Nait look like it has ever been serviced? @NeilS

Thanks.

If it has, not recently.

There are a couple of Panasonic Blue Bead Capacitors in there. Naim haven’t used these for a very long time.

To address the unit in the original photo, the preamp supply cap has been changed (the large blue axial) & possibly the yellow tantalums. The earth wire is also incorrectly routed over the transformer. The pen markings denoting wire locations & capacitor polarity, would suggest it was worked on by someone unfamiliar with the unit (not Naim or Darran).

@badlyread that one is completely original.

Regards
Neil.
