For a bit of an unusual suggestion…try the soundtrack from the first Crocodile Dundee movie. Very well recorded-I used to play it with a Zeta/Koetsu and there was some palpable shuddering bass. Give a listen especially to ‘In The Truck’, a blues-laden instrumental featuring slide acoustic guitar and some tasty fretless bass.
So many to choose so trying to suggest one that is less obvious or well-known.
Good Time is a great crime thriller and well worth checking out but the soundtrack is also strong and by Oneohtrix Point Never. Electronic-based and echoes of Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, Eno/Byrne etc. Highly recommended
Among my favourite soundtracks are (in no special order)
Godzilla Final Years, Iron Man, The Church, Best Revenge, Hamagedon, Muderock, Night Hawks and Inferno all composed by the late great Keith Emerson. They are available on a box set called Emerson at the Movies. The films are probably awful, but I like the music.
Long Good Friday by Francis Monkman (better known as the keyboard virtuoso in Curved Air and Sky)
The Wicker Man by Paul Giovanni (quite possibly my favourite film)
Italian Job by Quincy Jones
Legend of Hell House by Delia Derbyshire (not a great film in my view, but I’m not a film person)
The Prisoner (original TV series) by Albert Elms et al (quite possibly my favourite TV series)
Jason King & The Professionals by Laurie Johnson
And my favourite soundtrack composer is Edwin Astley: Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), Department S, The Champions, The Baron, The Saint, Gideon’s Way and Danger Man
There are many others - I often prefer the soundtracks to the films though I’m no cinema goer nor film channel subscriber so my film knowledge is scant.
Anything by Ennio Morricone.
My favorite is “Days of heaven”.
Blurring sound tracks with scores - most films with Lalo Schifrin or David Holmes.
Off the top of my head (as the last is long):
Bullitt,
Dirty Harry,
Magnum Force,
Mission Impossible 1 and 2,
Ocean’s 11/12/13’ Heywire.
Last of the Mohicans ( never seen the film )
The Rock
Restless Natives - Big Country
Local Hero
Braveheart
I have to say that the music to the TV series of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is one of my all time favourites, the Nunc Dimmitis with the superb boy soprano , wonderful.
As an aside , I put the CD of the BBC Audio Book Smileys People through my system a few weeks ago, my speakers are Harbeths P3ESR and with Simon Russell Beal’s superb George Smiley it was an audiophile treat .
I don’t think we give enough attention to the joys of wonderful diction and acting
Baby Driver !
The Painted Veil - with Lang Lang
The Killing Fields - Mike Oldfield
The Last Emporer
Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid.
Easy Rider.
Two Fantastic Movies with Fantastic Soundtracks.
Endless Summer
Woodstock
The Graduate
Friends (Elton John)
Yellow Submarine
Magical Mystery Tour
Performance ( Sir Mick)
The Song Remains The Same
The Last Waltz
Three of my favourites which I’ve not spotted above:
Singin’ in the Rain — music and pictures blend seamlessly together, pure joy.
Bridge on the River Kwai — Malcom Arnold deservedly won an Oscar for his score. The incorporation of the march Colonel Bogey is particularly effective and reflects the ambiguity of the film and the book on which it was based.
Manhattten — Woody Allen’s homage to New York. Also, I think, a homage to George Gershwin whose music accompanying the superb black and white photography gets me every time.
Roger
Meet Joe Black. Excellent Thomas Newman composed soundtrack. I’ve not seen the film, but came across some of this music used for an advertisement many years ago.
Good call sir!
Woman in the dunes - the score by Toru Takemitsu sits perfect.
Directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara .. early 60’s.
the soundtrack to The last of the Mohicans (Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman) is one of my favourites, First Man is also one I am liking, and for a classic Film Mary Poppins - not necessarily the songs though but the instrumental music
