Nap 500 dr speakers

I have just seen a pair of Naim S800 second hand on ebay, as an owner I would say surely an offer too good to miss!!!

Love this album, you can probably tell by my handle.

Couldn’t find it in tidal or Qobuz. I’ll have to play a cd. Omg

I prefer to stream my local CD copy of Physical Graffiti. The drums are very prominent without dominating the mix. Robert Plant (Ned?) sounds great. The hires is about the same, while Celebration Day makes me vibrate more, but less vibration is more to me.

So obviously you could look for a more powerful amp, but if you stay in Naim it would be statement - which is a ridiculous solution. So following options I am thinking about…

  1. Are room acoustics perfect, positioning of the speakers, closer or further away from the wall could make a difference.
  2. Have you tried a 2nd ps on your nd555 or perhaps you already have. Or other means of increasing the purity of the sound (audiophile switch etc).
  3. 1/2 don’t bring the solution, consider another amp with more power, or just accept that with certain albums you miss something.

I think 3 is spot on. Be satisfied with 95%.

I went to one of the shows where that was recorded (Capital Center, Washington DC)

Room acoustic optimization may help. I found in my room that moving listing position to get proper room mode for bass is very satisfactory.

I noticed that you are using Ansuz D2 cable. I had Ansuz A2 cables previously. Ansuz cable are amazing. I found that Ansuz sounds are a bit forwarding, transparent, very detail but not the prominent in Bass. Could it be cable issues ?

The Nap500 is a $35K amp. Not sure what it means for it to not deliver enough current.
Is it quality vs. quantity? Or something else?

Most likely due to being a bridged design. Being of a fairly benign load, Naim speakers don’t need huge amounts of current into low impedences. Naim wanted to design a more powerful power amp but without the usual performance compromises that multiplying the output devices usually brought, hence why a bridged design was very attractive.

I still like Led Zeppelin II over the others including Physical Graffiti, but I’m not deep into rock. I do think II is exceptionally good and the drumming towards the end (Moby D*ck) is some of the best I have ever heard.

Very cool Bart, that was one show I never got to see. I have seen all three surviving members live however, but on their own. In 1984 I saw Jimmy Page in Detroit with “The Firm”. I saw Robert Plant twice, the Now and Zen tour in 1988, and I saw him again with The strange sensation, I think that was 2006. I then saw JPJ with “ Them crooked vultures” at the casino here in Windsor Ontario. Best rock band ever!

I think HiFi Critic found the peak current into 2Ω of the 500 was 18A whereas that of the 300 was 25ish, the bridging allows greater voltage swing and lower noise at the cost of some current.

I thought the transient currents could go much higher much more quickly on the 500.

Ironically, JP-J was not on the ‘No Quarter’ sessions / album, even though he was the main composer for the actual ‘No Quarter’ track. The surviving three have followed very different paths, with JP being a bit stuck in the past with the catalogue, while Percy (RP) and J-PJ have forged different careers.

@Filipe The remixes on CD#2 of the remastered ‘Houses of the Holy’ (which is on Qobuz), which contains alternative mixes of the main album is worth a listen or two.

Listened to Zeppelin PG last night, it just is not bass friendly. I can live without one album. I can always go out to the garage and crank up the Marantz and the old Belles, adjust the bass and treble and all is right in the world transporting back in time to Terrace Apartments 1978.

If I used a NAP 500 and it would not properly drive any loudspeaker I would use, I would be very disappointed with either the amp (unlikely) or the dealer who advised me (more likely).
