I think some here posted the same experience - but currently the nds is the only way to get best naim streaming with the old sound signature.
I think nd555 will stay with its new signature - more hifi, less texture
Hi, just curious.
Do you still have to try AudirvÄna? I really believe it might give you some of the magic back that the ND555 is lacking at this moment. Big advantage is that during the trial you could also take the AudirvÄna/ NDS into the comparison. That way you can define the effect that AudirvÄna has better. Wether it is to your liking or not.
I have a laptop running the AudirvÄna Linux Core Player, but the Windows and Mac versions are somewhat easier to install and use.
My laptop is connected by ethernet to my router as us my ND5 XS 2. AudirvÄna has no problem identifying and connecting to the Naim.
It is not that I want you to use AudirvÄna so badly, entirely up to the user, but I just think it is a shame that such a great device like the ND555 is not being used. Maybe AudirvÄna can revive your love for it.
Thanks for pushing me to audirvana.
But the nds is doing its job perfectly well âŠ
Texture at its best - and very silky analogue soundâŠ

I believe you, no doubt⊠Still the 555 is gathering dust⊠![]()
No, he is suffering and waiting for his vaccination, Pfeizer 3.11.
I want give a short status how very happy I am with my new (older) streamer ![]()
NDS with 2x 555psdr is doing a wonderful job.
All is a bit less airy and a bit smaller as with nd555 (at its better days) but nds is a master of warm textures and pefect cohesion. Itâs so relaxing to listen to and also exciting and involving. Nice!
Did you or do you have the opportunity to stream a ND5xs2 into the NDS ?
Curious to find some who has done this with the current FW.
I have, but I wonât do - as the nd5xs2 has also the new fw on. This ca not be better.
I have been joyfully using a ND5xs2/nDAC/PS555DR with the latest firmware for 4-6hrs daily and I have not yet encountered shrill/sibilance/bass bloom. This combination is very musical.
I am curious as an NDS may be my next upgrade, which I will feed with a ND5xs2.
My ND5XS2 into NDS sounds lovely tonight. ![]()

The Naim DAC was brilliant in its own way, but I wonât be going to back to it.
I have the same set up as you and have found a little harshness on some female vocals. BeyoncĂ©â Halo being one example.
I spent a good few hours listening last night and it all sounded very good.
Spookily Iâm doing what you are considering this weekend as my new to me NDS arrives on Friday. Iâll let you know how it goes.
To keep the thread alive ⊠for the hope that there will be a reason to compare nd555 (3.11) to nds soon
Hello everyone, this is an insightful post about streaming players and their power supplies with many interesting opinions.
Iâve been using an NDS with a 555DR for several years; This combination has given me a beautiful, analog, three-dimensional sound. A month ago, I added a second 555DR. The sound is tighter, more authentic, and simply more believable. The musical naturalness of my system has improved significantly. An investment thatâs worthwhile even for the old NDS. Youâre ready for the ND555 ![]()
Welcome @Thomas82 Nice to hear from you (again) ![]()
Hi, I had the same experience going from a single 555DR to adding a second dedicated power supply for Socket2, which feeds the Analogue output circuitry of the DAC stage. This is thought the area most sensitive to noise from the power supply
On the NDS
Socket2 only supplies one voltage rail, +/- 22v
Socket 1 for the digital supplies +/- 10v and two +15v rails
There is an additional +12.5v rail on the 555DR only used by the ND555 and previously CD555, given the 555DR was originally designed for this CD player.
The NDS also takes the +/- 22v in on Socket1 which can be used with the Anaolgue circuits when used with the Link plug on Socket2. This provides the NDS with compatibility with the XPS-DR & even the NP5XS power supplies, which the ND555 doesnât.
Not sure whether the SQ improvement comes most from the separation of mains supply with the second power supply, or that the draw is reduced on the 555DR in only using 4 out of the 7 (5 for the ND555) voltage rails for Socket 1 and just 2 for Socket2.
Naim always tell us âLess draw equals less noiseâ
Does this means that with split power supplies on the NDS a 555DR has less draw on Socket1 than a ND555 in similar configuration, given there is one less rail used?
And with less draw is less noise, so better! ![]()
Is that same as a more slim/taut and more tight bass with more definition? Less warm and organic?
The extra rail used is for the clock, and i would say that is definitely a bonus over the NDS.
Which supply rail does the NDS use for its DAC clock?
Itâs the same DAC design
According to this diagram, the +12.5v supply is used by the USB port, presumably on the back for powering a connected storage device.
On the NDS & ND555, the DAC & Clock is the same supply.
See the diagram from the NDS Whitepaper
The NDS has a USB port on the front, which goes into the steamer card, as a source. The ND555 has the same, but without being able to read the content on an Apple device (iPhone, iPod etc,)
I feel this one is for our technical master.
