I think they look great in white with old classic gear.
I actually like those grilles, durable and maximum protection for the drivers, look very modern in the black finish.
What stands are you using?
They do indeed look fine but my reply to Nina was about what sort of dust protection the grilles would offer to her SCM19s. None!
I am not sure my ATCs needed any dust protection, as they used covered dust protected voice coils. I know exposed voice coils do need dust protection, but not sure how popular those designs are these days.
I was only thinking about minimal dust protection as I believe the drivers are slightly ‘tacky’ to begin with due to the coating ATC apply to them
I’m sure eventually I’ll remove the grills though
I have Custom Design stands for the 19’s
My demo pair came from my dealer with CD stands but the ones I purchased are the XL versions to accommodate for the larger 19’s girth!
My partner assembled the stands last night, bless him, but we ran out of time to unbox the 19’s so that’s a job for today
I’m not looking forward to the run-in period for the 19’s but hopefully they will sound ok straight out of their boxes with room to improve over the next few hours/weeks
I wouldn’t say our house is particularly dust free… and never noticed any dust sticking to the ATC mid/bass drivers…
I did find the ATCs did take time to lose their slightly restrained sound… I ran my several pairs of ATCs when new facing each other out of phase on mono for several days at medium volume… there was some sound leakage but not too much.. it sped up the run in
Thanks SIS. We have no animals in the house or kids so we’re hoping the 19’s will be happy here
The only other speakers that I’ve had to run-in were the Magneplanar’s and they didn’t take very long to come on song
I’m just hoping that the ATC’s don’t take too long to break in properly
Ok, but I think you will find they do… all my ATCs did over the years… especially the large domed bass drivers. So possibly be prepared for that. I suggest get a hundred hours or so under the belt before you start optimising positioning etc.
I take it you mean breaking/running in SIS.. if so how long did it take?
Yes exactly… I suspect it’s the mechanical speaker driver suspension systems loosening up… as I say 100 hours is good in my experience.. though there are subtle improvements after that still…
As I say play mono having speakers facing each other out of phase. (Out of phase mono cancels much of the emitted sound) to fast track run in… or leave running on repeat when out of the house.
I don’t think I could bear that.
I think we’ll just run the 19’s while we are in and out of the house to help them along with their break in period
We’ll be unpacking them from their boxes this afternoon sometime and popping them on their new stands. We are just hoping they don’t sound awful initially as we’ve got so used to the well run-in pair of demo 19’s
I believe ATC says they don’t need running in as they’ll sound great ‘out of the box’ but in my experience all speakers need a run-in period
We will see how they sound straight out of their boxes later on today but I’ll report back once that’s done
They won’t sound awful, just a bit restrained and tight .. 50-100 hrs will be all good.. enjoy the ride!
Thanks for your help HD. I’m hoping the 19’s won’t sound awful when we pop them in the system but maybe there will be room for improvement over the next few hours/ weeks
They certainly won’t sound awful from the get go… and you are right ATC unlike some other manufacturers dont recommend run in… but I can only speak from my 20 odd years of being an ATC customer of several of their models… perhaps I am more fussy of my audio than many of their customers ..
Anyway look forward to hearing your reports when up and running.. I am sure you will be smiling.
Let’s hope so SIS and I thank you for your input, much appreciated
I already love ATC’s from my demo 19’s…they have such an incredible sound quality
It’s only the run-in that concerns me a bit
Only childs and pets.
Even not spiders or coakroaches.
That looks really nice - I like the white. V different from a lot of HiFi setups. But how about a rug? ![]()
