New ATC’s 19’s Have Arrived!

There’s something comforting about blutack. Knowing that there’s a bit of suspension and grip on the top plate.

Indeed it’s comforting.. but for me it just gets in the way of performance. Yes I have tried many different variants of BluTak and even some products that are designed for this task of varying thickness … for me and my speakers it just gets in the way of performance… and therefore what is the point.

But if it works for you then I am jealous.. as it would help stop the speakers being shifted by the cleaner.

That’s my primary use case!!

It always strikes me as slightly odd that while floorstanders are invariably fixed (usually screwed) to their supports, standmounts usually are not, although there are some exceptions. If this coupling is so critical (and I’m not trying to cast doubt on your claims) shouldn’t it also be of some significance on floorstanders?

Hopefully this will not trigger a new forum fad for dismantling floorstanders to stick fancy decoupling stuff under them!

Well it’s the coupling to the stand which lowers the resonance frequency point. This also works with lossy coupling in my experience - ie resting a speaker on stand top plate.

I guess larger floor mounts in heavy cases might have a low resonance point anyway through the structure of the cab.

The other consideration is lose decoupling for higher frequencies = which you can usually tune with standpoint speakers - and you can ‘tune’ by using differing techniques, such as top plate placement, top plate material and other methods … for me this is valuable for getting that clear non exaggerated and non smeared natural sound from the upper mids..

Now in my experience many floor mount speakers can suffer here because you can’t tune - and often sound unnatural and and exaggerated in the mid field - though many work well in the far field.

This is why I prefer standmounts in the mid and near field - as they are offer more tuning options to match the environment and typically therefore a more natural presentation…. in my opinion.

You can see why many of us say that room/speaker matching is so important.

My dealer has just loaned me a pair of Solidsteel SS5’s in the raw finish

This is what they look like:

The 19’s seem to love them and now they are at the perfect height…. The CD 104’s were just a little too tall @ roughly 620mm but the SS5’s @ roughly 10cm lower seems perfect to me and my partner

Don’t the 19’s now look well planted on the SS5’s…?

I’ve just called my dealer to order SS5’s in the black finish

My lovely dealer will give me the full purchase price of the CD 104’s against the Solidsteel SS5’s and you can’t ask for more than that can you?

Good aesthetic choice I’d say, and kudos to the dealer for helping out.

Thanks CR…

I think the 19’s look great on the SS5’s and yes my local dealer has been absolutely amazing helping me out and have been very understanding

The Solidsteel SS5’s are so impressive… they are just so sturdy and that’s without any extra weight yet put into them

They are beautifully built and the tripod configuration makes them just so perfectly sturdy

Much better, safer too

Thanks Hollow

Absolutely much safer

The tripod configuration is so stable

I can see why people recommended them for my 19’s…. so thanks everyone!

They don’t 100% match your rack, but the raw steel stands look really good with those. You sure about black?

While I like the raw finish MF I can see that the black might be better

When I was in the store earlier they had a pair of SS6’s in black and thought they looked great

If it was just me I’d probably go with the raw finish but I have to please my lovely partner too… luckily he likes the look of the SS5’s but must be in black so that’s what I’ve ordered

Those stands look much better. If you could move the end table and spread the speakers out you’d be in business.

Is that what it is Neil

It’s my partner’s old player.. I always thought it sounded pretty good

I’ve also got an old Marantz CD50 (or maybe 52, I can’t remember!) so we’ve got a choice after selling the Naim cd player

However both of us are now streaming converts unless, of course, my partner has the vinyl version then we’ll spin up his Rega turntable

Thanks EM… I also think the 19’s look a lot better on the SS5’s

Going forward we intend to move the little table out and move the 19’s a little further apart which I know will help the sound even more

Yes that might well help them breath better and provide better stereo imaging. Looks good.

Thanks SiS

The 19’s are sounding great on their new stands

All I’ve used is a bit of BlueTack to anchor them onto the top plates at the moment

I’m not sure the SS5’s need loading with any filler

Those are much better IMO, when you remove the table to spread them apart a little…I would also move them forward. Why not move the front two legs of the stands even with the front of the rack? It’s not like that little bit of room in front of the speakers is usable right now anyway is it? If you do not like it, shove them back against the wall.
