All this talk of exotica made me take a good look at my own plinth and think would I seriously consider changing it? The answer after about 5 seconds was No! Plain and simple (Just like me 
).
Hinges are original and do not hold up the cover. Like Guy Martin (Who tries to make his brake discs last 100k miles) I’m going for the oldest hinges ever. PS: I’m pretty sure my top plate is made of Valyrian steel

Well it’s all a bit strange really, Linn have shown that they can do the Bedrok in a painted finish which really does open up the appeal of the thing. The LP12-50 was in white so no why not?
Seeing all the layers of compressed wood on the front is far less appealing than the real grain of a standard plinth and the front is really the show area of the plinth. One would have thought that reason would have made the Bedrock an even more likely candidate for a paint!
And what if you had a pair of Klimax 360’s in the the fancy Single malt colour and wanted to match the turntable like they can with a standard plinth, you would have thought the Klimax product would have had more options. And then there’s the price! It should come diamond studded for A$20,000.

Yep - bugger that Mario at that price - way over the top
Standard LP12 plinth say $1.5k and pretty good sound wise. Hard to justify the $20k plus another top plate

Looks fantastic Paul - what wood/manufacturer is the plinth?
It’s the original 1980s Linn plinth. I think it’s actually Afro but it also looks a bit Walnut to me. I don’t know if that was an option back then.

Yeah- mine is the original afro too dating from 1982- but yours looks quite different to mine and like walnut. Hence the question.

Walnut is my favourite wood and it maybe that it is Walnut as Afro looks a bit more orange to my eyes but I can’t seem to find any reference to whether Walnut was an option in 1987. I hope it is Walnut though. Maybe I should just believe it is. I love it whatever

I have found a reference to Maple plinths being available from 2002 adding to the existing options of black, rosewood, walnut and afromosia on the vintage-turntables website so maybe it could be Walnut (citation needed).

Here’s a close up of my afro- the flash exaggerates the orange hue but it lacks the grain that yours has.
Walnut is the only plinth I would consider swapping mine for btw.

Thanks for the replies, and to keep us on topic, I think a Bedrok plinth veneered in walnut would be acceptable to me although I doubt fluting would work in this case.

Flutes and black painted lower level (as my first and second plinths were) look SO right IMO.
