Following on the earlier discussion of standby mode for the 300 series, I wanted to poll the community about using system automation along with auto-standby.
I have my NSS 333 set up to go into standby mode after 1 hour of non-use. With system automation in place, that means the NAC 332 and NAP 250 also go into standby mode. It’s a great environmental feature.
The tricky part comes when I’m using my turntable. I notice 2 things - first, the NSS 333 gets turned on even when I’m only using the turntable. More importantly, after 1 hour the NSS 333 puts the whole system into standby, despite a record being played.
The second scenario can be worked around by having the streamer in operation while records are playing, but that seems wasteful of bandwidth. Wondering if I’ve missed something. Any other strategies for this, besides forgoing the auto-standby feature?
What earlier discussion about NC standby - why not post on that thread??
No understanding about bandwidth comment in relation to vinyl.
Anyway, how do you expect the NSS 333 knows that it shouldn’t turn on?
I use NC2 series kit + a NAT02 - if I turn the tuner off, the rest of the kit doesn’t know it should hibernate! Unless you can justify what should happen, what does happen is likely exactly on spec!
Our tv can do the same if I’m streaming a film and effectively just using the tv as a monitor; it warns after how many hours that it’s going to go into standby.
Your scenario would appear to be a reason not to use auto standby plus system automation, if there’s another device that’s excluded and can’t say “hey I’m still playing here!”
The earlier thread closed back in Feb. It’s linked at the top of this post, using the “Reply as a Linked Topic” feature.
That referred to using internet streaming bandwidth to keep the NSS 333 from going into standby.
Probably no way to do it, but that’s why I’ve reached out to see if others knew something I didn’t.
You’re right that the standby is behaving as expected. It would be nice if system automation was able to detect the vinyl signal going through the NAC 332 and NAP 250 to prevent the NSS 333 to trigger a standby.
This then stops the streamer from shutting the NAC 332, etc. down when you are playing an LP or any other source through the system. No need to stream anything either.
Naim are very much aware of this issue as it became very apparent when the NC separates appeared. It has been reported to Naim by myself & others too once the 332 appeared on the market and we started to integrate them into systems with Naim streamers.
The ND5XS-2 & NDX-2 will also switch the NAC 332 into Standby if System Automation is put in place with a 332 and the streamer is set to Auto Standby after a period of nothing being played.
I was told recently that, once the new “CI” products have been signed off from a software perspective, then Naim will get their s/w team on dealing with the list of NC bugs!!!
Manually switching the system into Standby will still work.
Sorted this for a 333/332/350 customer recently who also has his Rega P-8/Nd7/Aria fed into the 332, so I know it works - all four NC boxes come on & go off together from one Standby button press, whether via front panel, remote &/or via app along with Sys Automation for volume & i/p selection of both pre-amp and streamer.
Thanks, could do; basically giving up the auto-standby feature altogether in order to prevent it from happening when I don’t want it (e.g. when playing vinyl). I do hope the software team comes back to this one at some point, per your suggestion.
