New firmware update

Yep. They would tell me there was no detriment. But I told them that could not be true, and to prove it. I’m not sure the dealership really understood the question. They just agreed to stop asking me about it everytime I went in…

Anyway back to Naim firmware. Which incidentally went ok for me. Not sure I can hear any change in SQ either. But then again, I can’t really see any changes to the app except that favourites star thing.

I still have the last x5 versions of the NDX1 on file, 4.4 was always a good one, could not make my mind up with the 4.6 various & I played around swapping back & forth, but 4.7 is a keeper.
It was fun in the old firmware days, able to swap back & forth.

Is it possible to join for just the app?

I’d like to join the beta testing group, but I’m fairly sure my gf wouldn’t be interested at all, so can’t join with my devices.

I also don’t agree. I have been very happy with the improvements from the recent updates.

Hmmm, I had a similar issue the other day. I can’t recall whether it was just before or just after the update.

In my case a power cycle (unplugging from the mains) fixed it.

Within beta testing:
There’s the option to switch back to the last released version or the current beta. Kind of fail-save, if the beta is unusable for a user.
No older versions are available.

Should be technically no problem. Just ask them, as described above.

The point of beta testing is supposed to be that you just continue using your system as normal, and report any unexpected behaviour if you find it. There’s no obligation to change your listening habits in any way, or even to load any particular firmware or app update as soon as it’s released. Your gf doesn’t even need to know about it.

In your system, to your ears and to your tastes…

Either that or change their release schedule. I think it wouldn’t be such an issue if there were more but smaller updates. Less things in an update, mean less things can break and Naim can iterate quickly to get it fixed instead of users having to live for another 5 months with any bugs introduced.

If such an update broke anything, I’d know about it :grimacing:

Yes, but you tell it at all, as if you were back from everything and in possession of the absolute truth…

Well, that’s the way you read/understand/interpret it.

No doubt! But I must say that in maybe 6 years of Naim beta testing I have never had an update deprive me of access to my music.

Most professional IT firewalls take for instance a SonicWALL UTM appliance once a new firmware has been applied you also have the option to boot the appliance from the previous firmware if things don’t work out maybe Naim could look at introducing a similar setup.

The other problem with Naim it take so long for the next firmware release take the screen issue this fix was tagged on a long list of other features/fixes why not roll out interim fixes.

I see Thomas’ post as redressing the balance between those that are experiencing a worsening of SQ from the FW update and those who see an uplift in SQ from FW update.

Reaeding this thread you could believe the FW update caused a backward step in SQ for the majority of users. But remember the saying that those who endured a poor experience will tell 10 people compared to those who have a good experience only telling 3 people.

I suspect for the majority the FW update went well and they have not noticed any real change in SQ. Hence no need to post on here.

I am not in anyway belittling the real problems some have experienced, be they a reduction in SQ, new features not working properly, even total silence. Indeed I also agree that the beta testing programme needs looking at and the beta team should be expanded.

WRT those asking to roll back to previous FW versions on SQ grounds, there is a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I would suggest the vast majority have either noticed no difference in SQ or a slight but worthwhile improvement.

Many software companies I have worked with have seperate feature and bug-fix releases. The latter running on a more regular beat e.g. quarterly.

I would be curious to know Naim’s rationale for changing the sound signature as it clearly causes a lot of angst and disappointment for some users. Perhaps they adopt the Apple philosophy ‘we know best’? I assume the beta testers are told of the sound changes rather than leaving it to themselves to figure out…

As for my take, I prefer the sound signature change - I noticed a definite improvement in clarity on some tracks. Admittedly, I lean towards the brighter side of sound…

I am listening to Bai Kamara Jr & Voodoo Sniffers Salone album in hi res via Qobuz and it has never sounded so good. Yes, a little more forward but not bright. Just a bit more real and in the room.

The only change - v3.5 of the Firmware!

Updated my NDX2 to the new firmware and it went smoothly, no issues. But today in the middle of streaming from the Unitiserve, the music suddenly stopped, it disappeared from the app, then proceeded to reboot itself. After that it returned to normal, which is where I hope it stays.

Most odd and doesn’t inspire confidence. Anyone else had this ?
