New Naim Internet Radio - Feedback & Requests - Part 4

A repeat of the opening post from Part 1:

At Naim, we understand that while many people use our products to get the best listening experience from their own music collection; sometimes you simply want to put the radio on and let someone else choose. We’ve offered a comprehensive internet radio solution for some time, and we are now delighted to announce the launch of our own in-house internet radio solution.

In a collaboration between XPeri and our team here at Naim, we have brought the internet radio server in-house to be maintained internally, as opposed to relying on a third party as with the previous server. This will improve reliability and has opened up a host of improvements to the service, detailed below:

- A selection of over 45,000 stations worldwide
- Advanced metadata feeds for artist, track and album info on many stations
- Focus on high-quality audio streams
- Improved station categorisation
- High-resolution station artwork
- Automated station scanning
- Station podcasts (where available)

The Focal & Naim app will identify any favourites and presets that should be resaved to use the new server.

These updates are not only improving the internet radio server but improving our streaming capabilities too. TIDAL’s new 24-bit, 192 kHz streaming tier, TIDAL Max, is now available through both the Focal & Naim app and TIDAL Connect.

In a significant update for our Chinese customers, Q-Play is now supported in Naim products. QQ Music is one of the largest music streaming services in China, and users are now able to select their Naim streamer from within the QQ Music app for a seamless listening experience.

Regards,
Naim Audio – Software team

With the launch of Naim’s new Internet Radio service (see above), I’ve created this dedicated thread where information can be posted relating to the service and members can post feedback and requests for the team at HQ.

Examples of how this thread can be used;

  • Announcements on key new stations / station rebrands etc. For example recently a big change in UK for Bauer Media and Global. Scala radio rebrands to Magic Classical and about 16 other new or existing stations changing.
  • request stations that we don’t have.
  • issues with a station. Eg, wrong meta / won’t play and so on.
  • notifications of any downtime on either our system in a given region, or a dependent system like the xperi live radio meta.
  • Search issues. We have the station but its hard to find as needs more tags.
  • feature requests / feedback / general radio gossip

Please ensure posts here are ONLY feedback re. the new Naim radio service. Thanks.

The latest January update can be read here:

@Stevesky I hope you are enjoying a well-earned holiday. For when you are back: Is there a way to backup the presets? Or should I make a list manually of my presets as backup?

Please can you add BBC Radio 3 Unwind.
Many thanks.

Hi @wemorgan

Unfortunately BBC3 Unwind is a BBC Sounds online channel and as an official BBC content licensee we can’t offer this currently. Various other radio directories have it but they are unlicensed and it’s from reverse engineering, so the BBC are cracking down on such things.

If the BBC launch these channels on DAB+ then we can add this stream + the radio1 anthems and long debated bbc radio 2 ‘oldies’ channel.

Last BBC consultation notes here:

Hi @whatu1tme2b

At this moment in time the user added stations can’t be backed up. We have longer term plans for this area but due to the complex legal landscape of storing users data for a product sold worldwide this is a non trivial task.

So for now, keep notes of the url’s etc that have been added as stations.

On a station Now Playing page there’s often a photo of the current artist - this looks really naff as it doesn’t really add anything. A short textual biography/discography would be more useful

Thanks for the reply. I can imagine it is not easy with all different rules and regulations. Appreciate the effort!

The internet radio connections to GBNews and the various Boom radio stations will not play on my Muso QB2 They are rock solid on my ND5 XS2. The former is running on firmware 4.4.1 (6600) and the ND5 on 3.10.1.(5617).

This problem has only occurred within the last few days. I am able to play the stations available on the Naim selection plus BBC2 . I have tried rebooting by removing power from the Muso several times to no avail. The Muso and ND are wired ethernet not wifi. Occasionally the stations in question will connect for a few seconds on the Muso before permanently dropping out.

Streaming music from Qobuz and from my servers are also rock steady.

Please can you assist?

Hi - any idea when the firmware release for us poor folk on older equipment will be? Thanks

Hi, is there any chance of adding Psyköhead FM as I accidentally deleted it when it became in house.
Thank you

Hi MSW,

Sure can.

best

Steve

Thank you really appreciate that :grinning:

Hi Geoff,

That issue sounds a bit more complex than this thread can deal with. Can you contact our support desk and they will do the necessary to hopefully diagnose the issues and get you going again.

I’ve checked the stations mentioned and there isn’t any issue that can be found, so I think a local issue with the Muso / Network.

Steve

Steve. Thank you for your quick reply and check up of the stations. I’ll make contact as you suggest, much appreciated.

I’ve just noticed the bitrate has disappeared from the
display on my NDX2, when you choose the track info that is. Has this been like this since the new radio system or did it happen with a recent fw? The display implementation is bad enough without going further and removing things!

Hi @Hollow

In the example given the station has full metadata, so metadata prioritises over showing data like bitrate.

As shown in your pic there is limited space on the screen + it needs ho be readable from a few meters so we can’t put everything on there.

Overall, there is more interest in what’s playing rather than monitoring the bitrate of the stream. Some customers have requested we go further and expose more of the extended meta on the front display for radio - a case of streaming is a very personal thing on expectations, Of course we expose that stat on the ios/android apps, plus for an ultimate geek-out, go to the diagnostics page.

I am using v3.10.1 in a ND5xs2 and iOS App v7.2

In the iPhone Naim App v7.2 for Internet Radio, I have tried various ways to display / list stations which are FLAC only, Ogg Vorbis only, or AAC only.

Is this possible ? (Apologies if this has already been requested somewhere).

Or can this be a possible feature request in a new app release…please.

Hi @Dugby

Lossless streams are in the ‘Hidef’ view on the main menu.

We don’t have a view by AAC, as in practice we typical use AAC where possible and have a policy of using higher bitrate streams where possible. This radio solution is specialized for home audio products used on a modern internet connection, rather than handling lower quality mobile device radio.
