Hi Guys,
I have an NDX2 and I’m thinking of adding an NPX-300 or a 555PS-DR, and I’m wondering which would be best upgrade ?
Thanks.
Hi Guys,

555PSDR is better.
Upgrading to, or upgrading with?
555PS DR is the better power supply. One of my best upgrades
Is the recap/maintenance schedule different between the two of them?
I saved this from a while back.
Olive (circa 1989 - 2000) every 8 - 10 years
Newer Black products (2000 - present), every 12 - 15 years
I was thinking about that too, and whilst I wouldn’t mind sending a 555 back to Naim for a recap, I’d be interested to find out how much it would cost.
5-600-ish GBP. Mine is 11 years now so I’ll send mine back for service next year.
Class A serviced my cd555dr couple of years ago. It was about £500 for the service.
Current price at Class A is £599 for a DR unit. I’ve just sent one of my 555’s in for service. Apparently Darran only has one 555 service kit and Naim are currently out of stock. He’s indicated there may be a 3-4 week wait before I can send my second unit in.
The Naim service price for 500 series kit was £849 in 2024. I haven’t enquired with them as to whether this has changed.
Ummm. Out of stock of a service kit. Bit like Ford saying they have run out of oil filters.
I expect there is one item naum are waiting on.
But as always if lead times are long or your supplier os not as reliable as you wish them to be, your best plan is to hold stock yourself. Surprised Class A are down to one kit. Sounds like naim coukd be low on stock too.
It was one item in the kit but one item or several, the service isn’t getting done.
Perhaps I should have said “only one full service kit”.
Ummmm. Poor supply chain management regardless. Frustrating that naim currently cant maintain their own kit. This will or will about to affect their ability to build new too.
If these are parts that are shared with new gear, then getting new gear out the door will take preference I would imagine.
Absolutely. Naim’s no1 priority is to keep the factory moving and they will prioritise new build over after-market ( service). Now, both are good earners, so only naim will know which one really gets priority, but id be very surprised if it were service.
The arrangement for shipping spares to Class A is also intresting. If I could only buy my spares from 1 supplier, and they couldn’t supply, and I was losing business,……then there is a conversation station to be had.
We have 3 items with Naim Service Dept. for servicing. Naim said that a delivery of critical spares (power supply capacitors?) was expected in by the end of July, at which point they could work through the backlog. As Naim supply Class A with service kits, it is inevitable that Darran is affected.
I demoed the two into an NDX2 a while back. I went for the 555 in the end. They were both very similar in adding much more resolution. They have different sound signatures though. I’d heard some of the new classic stuff and I thought the 300 sounded similar, “a cleaner sound” etc. The 555 made the NDX2 better but kept that “natural or live” sound. I was also thinking about synergy. My experience with Naim is that mixing different ranges doesn’t always work well.
Found the thread:
Same experience on NSS333. Kept the 555PSDR and returned 300.
Look inside if you cant decide.
That’s consistent with the email I got from Darran yesterday. He can’t service 555’s at present due to a second type of capacitor being out of stock from Naim.
