Ovator S-400 - the hankering is so, so strong!

No I haven’t and it’s a very good idea. Thank you for your suggestion. The only other thing is finding the time in this current working climate. Things have gone crazy just lately, and if i can find time, i will definitely experiment…

I love the look of the Ovator speakers, but will I like sound? That’s the question…

We made “hard tops” for the Briks, many year ago. A bit of a pain when we want to use them, but………

I like that finish. I don’t get on with black or dark speakers. I like the Ash the best I think. That said, I’m happy with my Cherry. I have an odd/L shaped listening room and the Ovators fire across the longer length. Sliding glass doors, entry door, and a cut out along the speaker wall, all make for challenging listening conditions and the Ovators don’t seem to care. Great vfm at the demo price I got.

I have no intention of moving on my n-SATs. Just looking for a bigger brother that i ‘wheel in’ when the going gets tough. King Tubby et al.

Please excuse my play-school schematic.

Sorry Stephen, but that sounds completely nuts.

Have you really thought this through?

If that’s still what you want to do, I’d strongly suggest you abandon the idea. You simply can’t wheel in such large speakers, it’s just not practical, and when they aren’t dominating the living room they will for sure be in the way somewhere else! It’s just a totally potty idea!

Now, what to do instead? Easy peasy. Get an nSub. I had one with my sats and it will transform them. If you can’t find a maple one, get another colour and put a thin cloth over it. You can programme settings and turn it off when you don’t need it. The sub will enhance your enjoyment of all music, not just Kung Tubby, whether or not it has bass as such. You get to hear the ambience of the hall so much more; I really liked what it did for solo violin.

Trust me, it’s the sensible thing to do.

Encouraging that the proposed S400s will be away from the corners as Naim advise.

Agree HH I suggested that to Stephen as well

The nSub is a beauty and the sensible way to go

And I’ve just found one for sale. £795 in black, and looks to be in great condition. Get a beige cloth for a few quid and job’s a good ‘un.

Wow! That is amazing! N-SUB it is then. I’d rather have the n-SUB, it will take up less space, be cheaper, and blend in with my n-SATs, plus i can tell Mrs T i’ve bought a new Scrabble table :innocent:

Great minds and all that. Let’s hope common sense prevails here. The sats and sub are are lovely combo, which of course they should be as they were designed to work as one. Why lug large speakers around the flat when you can just get a sub that sits against the wall and does its thing?

I thought they were maple, as in the avatar. It’s all so confusing.

Yes my n-SATs are in Piano Black. My avatar is a true picture of one of them. The fronts are of a beige colour complete with black grilles. I purchased them from a clock specialist and they were originally installed into an AV system. These n-SATs are absolutely spotless and are in mint unmarked condition, complete with all their original packaging and came with a pair of (mint) matching stands. What a find!

I’ve never seen so much love, praise and advice towards the little(?) Ovators 400. :smiling_face_with_tear:Truly chuffed and very emotional at the moment.!!!

Ah yes, I can see that now. A piano black nSub for £795, what could be better. This is, I feel, the power of the Forum, helping each other out. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

If that is the pair that I saw recently (there can’t be many white S-400s for sale at any one time surely) they looked very nice to me and I thought they were surprisingly cheap at their starting price. I think you did very well there.

The black n-Sub sounds like a great solution to me and it will clearly require minimal disruption to your current system.

Of course, just as with large floorstanders, set-up is key. Not only in terms of settings but also positioning in the room relative to the listening position and the speakers. One way to mitigate room interactions somewhat is to acquire a second n-Sub at some point…
