Phono Stage.....suggestions, please

Technics SL-1500C / Ortofon 2M Bronze - currently using Technics’ inbuilt phone stage (pretty decent tbh) - into Uniti Nova (out to ATC SCM7).

Looking for suggestions for price-comparative external phone stage. I’m looking to spend £200-£500…..ish.

Over to you…

Rega or Project at that sort of level.

If you think that you will be sticking with an MM cart into the future, then you really won’t find anything better than the Michael Fidler Spartan 15 MKii. It falls smack in the middle of your spend bracket and is the quietest MM phono stage there is. His stages far far outperform other stages costing 3 or 4 times the price and in my opinion can be end game as far as stages go.

For the budget and if buying new, I like IFI Zen Phono3 (£250)or a Graham Slee Gram amp 2 (280) Rothwell Rialto (£350) is very nice too and worth listening to

if you could stretch to it, a Graham Slee Reflex M (£540) is excellent.

If you wish to consider used then a Naim Stageline (N Model) can be had for around £200 or about £500 for new.

Or go a little higher, Swedish Lejonklou MM stages are really something.

I was going to say pretty much the same, you beat me to it

The 1500C phono stage is not decent! I thought so too once, when I heard it in isolation, and then I plugged the 1500C to the SN3 phono input and it was like 100 veils were lifted between myself and the performer, wow moment. A dedicated phono stage will be so so much better.

If you wanted to keep it in-house, so to speak, a Naim Stageline N with Naim i-Supply would do the job nicely. You would need a Naim 4-5pin interconnect too, to return the signal to your Nova.

+1. If you can find a late model Gaio (£250-£300) or Slipsik (£500-£600) they are seriously good MM phono amps. Unfortunately, they rarely come up on the used market.

I’ve had Slipsik 7.1 and it was very good indeed :+1: I’ve also enjoyed Heed phono stages. Very affordable.

I use a Thorens MM-008. It’s around €300 and sounds better than Nad or Project imo.

Doesn’t it need a PSU with the Nova?

Ah you’re right, a Nova would need a power supply to use a Stageline. It could be a used with an I-Supply but they are not always easy to find and so an easier option would be a used flatcap. It rather bumps the cost up of course.

I’ve removed some posts. Would members please respect forum rules. Thank you.

May I suggest a Moon 110LP², solid build, many settings…

Hi, I am wondering about Naim phono stage for MM or MC cartridge to play my Vinyls. I have noticed during demo that music is more dynamic and louder playing back from Uniti Core than from Phono Stage MM - signal strength knob on 9 (digital) and 11 (analogue). Personally I prefer analogue “sounds”, for me it’s more detailed and richer. But my questions are: 1. Maybe Phono Stage for MC cartridges plays better than for MM? 2. Do we need to put more power on the amp to receive similar dynamic and loudness listening music through Phono Stage MM or MC? Generally - I’m asking about the volume level, to compare between Phono Stage and CD player. Thank You in advance for clarification.

If you want something that’s compact that will do both mm & mc there is a Preloved ClearAudio Nano phono amplifier on eBay think it was £207 They have a little thumb wheel on top making it easy to adjust and dial in the gain to match your amplifier requirements.

No connection with the seller just enjoyed using the Nano in my own system in the past.

Thank you all for your input and advice. I opted for a pre-loved Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 SE with enhanced power supply. Got it (them) for £160.00 on good old eBay. Thus far, I am pleased with what I am hearing.
