Pics ‘From the Listening Position’

Thanks @Adam1 - nice one.

No worries, more than welcome. Mary in the woods is brilliant from Lo moon latest.

Now I realise I have come across Lo Moon before (!) as they covered one of Prefab Sprout’s finest ever tunes, ‘Bonny’!!!
And managed to make a decent fist of it, no mean feat. Can I apologise to everyone for the thread drift? - I’m aware this chat should be in the music section. But thanks again for pointing me (back) to Lo Moon.

It’s all about the music, my very good friends
Enjoy listening this weekend.

Happy listening

p.s. my own apologies for thread drift, which is about three guys enjoying music ( and on their respective HiFi ). Following on from a nice picture - from a listening position.

Not mine (yet), but home demo of ATC SCM50 Passive’s is an absorbing experience that demands a complete reappraisal of what I expect from my music listening. On the one hand a difficult to accept loss of warmth, air and immediacy versus my Shahinian Obelisk’s, on the other a startling wake up call that I’ve been missing so much dimension, detail and accuracy. This is like listening to master tapes. I’m still working on which version will be my long term future as they couldn’t be more different, but I’m completely riveted by what the ATC’s have to tell me about my music :firecracker:

Maybe I need to be thinking about what my new forum avatar might be …

I did not know that Everhot made a sub, but they do provide extra warmth.

Just spent the last 20 minutes getting everything back up and running following a 5 second power outage. Just enough time to upset everything…

Back in the room now…

I agree with @carruthersesq, that is a lovely room, Kevin. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the ATCs and I’ll be interested to read how you get on and where the journey ends. Will you be looking at the active versions too ?

I must admit that after hearing Nigel’s active PMCs, I’m very interested in hearing what active ATCs and PMCs would sound like here. Unfortunately 50s would mean a reorganisation of our lounge, so it’ll be 20 Towers vs the equivalent PMCs for me.

Don’t get me wrong, the Titans are superb, but over the last couple of months, my 350s are getting a bit noisy in the evenings (quiet as a mouse now) so something is going on with our mains supply, possibly related to neighbours solar installations / EV car charging. Something to investigate further on the mains side, but the active approach really appeals.

It will be an interesting comparison. I’d think most here have been Naim amplifier users for a good proportion of their hifi lives. Considering active speakers is certainly a move away from what most of us have enjoyed for many years. I’m not saying it’s wrong, just a shift for quite a few of us.

Until my switch about a month ago I’d had Naim power amps, or integrated amps, for 41 years. I can’t say that using PMC’s active amps has made the sound any less Naimy, simply better. Think how much going active with Naim would cost, that is if they still made the active crossover. You’d need a crossover, a power supply, two power amps, two sets of speaker leads. With active speakers it’s two XLRs to replace the speaker cables, two mains leads and that’s it.

Hi James,
I’m having the same thoughts re trying the active version. TBH, whilst these passives are incredibly impressive and revealing, they can sometimes be a little dry and matter of fact and I’m not yet sure if they just don’t do ‘beautiful’ or it’s me that hasn’t unlocked it yet. That could be a mismatch between them and the 500 or something else. I wonder if Actives would solve the issues yet keep all the bits that are right.

Titan 606 are an option I’m looking to get in at home after the ATC’s go back. I’ve heard them several times and always liked them, but had the impression that they maybe didn’t go low enough for me. I know 808’s would cut it, but sadly a very low score on WAF…

The new Dynaudio Contour Legacy possibly an option too?

I have the Titan 606 and run them active, originally with a Naim NAC 282 / SNAXO 242 (T606) / NAP 250 x2 and now with a Linn Selekt DSM Edition Hub.

They work very well as active with good detail and control over the deep bass. Never had an issue driving them and of the two setups, do prefer the Linn. Plenty of PRaT, detail and tie-tapping fun.

@KJC

What @DiggyGun said.

I’d certainly try the 606s in active mode. Some on this forum have them driven active via Linn and are very happy. Of course the new Sigao drive is coming on song so that may be another option. Trying to imagine what 4 x 350s would sound like driving the 606s.  Many ways to meet the aim, some more expensive than others. They will all have their own unique characteristics which may or may not suit you, your room etc.

Do you have access to the options you want to try via dealer(s)? Do keep us advised of how you get on, including pictures so we stay on topic.
