Yes, mine also Bob. I was there on his debut in 1982 when he scored against QPR and went to all of his league games, home and away, when he was Newcastle manager. He is (and always will be) idolised in the Toon. I was also lucky to meet him a few times, and he was an absolute gentleman and always had time for everyone. The superstars of today could learn a lot from his humility. Apologies for the photo…![]()

100% Andy a massive loss. I briefly met him in a bar in Fuengirola I think he was playing golf down there I’d had more than a few beers and was probably quite annoying but he was an absolute gent.
Lovely post and photo, Andy. Such a very sad loss.
I cannot add anything to this photo, other than to say I was an STH during his stay at The Dell.
Edit: According to Wikiwotsit, concerning his time at Southampton FC**: 68 appearances, 37 goals….
**indeed I would have seen a good number of his goals (if not all) at The Dell!
Very sad news.
Fellow Donny boy, a few years older tban me.
Great player - was it 2 Ballon d’Ors ?
Great person too.
I’ve just been listening to Ben Jacobs one of the better transfer journalists and he said that Arsenal told Villa they saw Morgan Rodgers as an £80 million player they where offered the player again after Chelsea had bid £117 million but they decided to walk away.
If true that is a £37 million over bid from Chelsea but apparently and as stated above Garnacho going the other way will soften the blow a bit and another rumour is that Hato is also up for sale just a year after joining Chelsea.
Given that he probably didn’t enhance his reputation at the World Cup I find myself wondering if the lower figure represents value. The higher almost certainly doesn’t. Would be very surprised if Unai can get a tune out of Garnacho.
Not sure where the Hato thing comes from but Garnacho off to Villa…Absolutely not a swap for Rogers. No. No way.
I came across a couple of Chelsea supporters stating that Hato wasn’t for sale to Arsenal at any price which I thought weird as he was one of your better players last season and Arsenal are pretty stacked in that position so just youtubers/content creators looking for clicks it would seem.
Apparently they were easy and compliant with Cucu’s wishes to return to Spain as that’s what he wanted to do but also they feel that Hato has the talent. Tough player to replace though…
Watched an Arsenal pod which actually made sense last night and it said that due to FFP rules last Summer Arsenal couldn’t afford to complete to signing of Hincapie and so had to do a loan deal and complete the signing this financial year as they did with David Raya.
So though we have had a very good year financially it’s not enough to start overpaying for players in the current market paying £117 million for Morgan Rodgers would have meant £40 million less in the kitty.
Considering they will have to pay north of £80 million if they hope to sign Guimaraes who will complete the Arsenal midfield and sign another striker paying that type of money for a player like Rodgers who doesn’t really move the needle in the same way makes no sense.
Cucurela is a big loss, hard boots to fill indeed. Hato is a fantastic talent but needs time so not a direct replacement really perhaps you will buy Chavarria from Rayo Vellacano.
I thought Cucu ( or as my spill chucker ) call him cucumber played with more passion than the entirety of certain clubs.
Sorry to see him go
Bournemouth rejects Chelsea’s £64M bid for Alex Scott.
Apparently though he wants to move to Chelsea.
Apparently though he wants to move to Arsenal.
Apparently though ManU would quite like him to move to ManU.
And yet we apparently still see Lacroix as a solid CB. Not what I saw at WC!
And no proper first rate keeper in sight either.
Both positions have been poorly filled for some years, yet we have about 39 midfielders…
Just pay the money for Diogo Costa and move on to a fully realised CB after selling Enzo…
Lacroix is a v solid CB although agree he had a poor GWC
Ah. Gives the ball away a bit though doesn’t he?
Not that much and he normally wins his mid-air duels. TBH, I hope he stays at Palace
‘Surely it can’t be happening’ nerves have now kicked in as LUFC appear to be in talks to sign the GK every Leeds fan I know wants. Let’s hope we can pull it off and Trafford parks his bus on the LUFC lawn.
US style sporting biz…
And an 18 year old from Wigan…
