I am on my 2nd QNAP 2 bay NAS drive in 8 years, and have been having issues with it
I am logged with the help desk (for 2 weeks +) very slow at 1 reply per day Mon-Fri
I think the issue may be a faulty memory card, am not too confident in my ability to change it if that is what they decide is the problem.
I think I just remove the 2 hard drives and replace the card(s), replace the hard disks and switch on, but not sure? I do have backups. If it is another problem I may be wasting my time/money
I like the QNAP software, when all up and running, can anybody recommend the TS264 with 8GB RAM, or should I jump ship to Synology.
Thanks - TS253D - Filestation does not open - click it icon just ‘bounces’ but nothing happens.
I cannot use Synch - it seems to start - comes up with ‘loading’ and the wheel spins until I do hard switch off.
Then it started re-synch which took 8 hours or so, this has happened twice.
The suggestion seems to be some sort of memory issue. I had this before but it seemed to correct itself. This has been going on for 2 weeks + and I am logged with the Helpdesk, but I think there is probably an issue with the unit. If one sends it to QNAP for repair, from memory I think they charge about £180 - so possibly better getting a new one?!
I am thinking should I just buy a TS264, but slightly lack confidence (getting old). If I remove my 2 x 6TB drives from current box, can I just insert them in a new unit & off I go?
TBH it sounds more like a software problem than a hardware one. It’s a long time since I had a QNAP (I moved to Synology) so I’m not that familiar with the various apps they have currently. But if you can still access your files over an SMB share without any file corruption (try streaming a movie or audio) then I’d suggest it’s a software or a configuration issue rather than hardware.
I am not sure I understand SMB?
I can play my music okay, so the NAS is working, it just seems to be the ‘Synch’ ‘Filestation’ etc.
I will have a look and see if I can decipher SMB, bit wary of messing about with it all?
SMB is the term used for Microsoft Windows file sharing. If you have a Windows PC you can access files on your QNAP with an SMB share set up on your QNAP. Maybe you don’t do this.
If you can stream audio files from your QNAP then likely the hardware is OK.
Thanks MrFixit, I have had a look, appears SMB is on (checkbox ticked). A few years ago I enabled (don’t remember how) in Windows Explorer access to the NAS, so I do drag and drop files from PC to NAS drive sometimes. It works fine, but very keen to get HSB3 back up and running, just like things to work !
I was asked by QNAP a few days ago to uninstall HSB3 (Synch) and re-install it.
I did this, and when tried to run a synched backup to one of my external drives it came up with ‘loading’ the wheel turning but nothing happened. Had to hard switch off, and when I switched on again up came ‘Raid Group synchronising’ for 8 hours.
I will report back with any further comments from QNAP
I would not power down using button, but had no choice, on trying to run ‘Synch’ App I just got ‘wheel turning’ and no way out of it.
Hoping I will get some sort of answer from QNAP today or tomorrow, drags on !?
What is the specific name for the app you are using to sync your files to an external drive? It’s important to be very specific on the details (name of app, error messages etc.) so that I can help. Is it Hybrid Backup Sync? If so, try clearing the browser cache and then try again.
Whilst I have found potential help using Google search, as I can’t see what you are doing I don’t know if I’m looking for the precise sue you are having .
It is indeed Hybrid Backup Synch which has worked fine for a few years, however I did have a similar problem to the current one a few months ago. It was suggested by QNAP that it could be a memory issue. They tried to get me to create a boot USB and connect the monitor to the NAS… then my PC packed up - I was told - faulty graphics card.
When I got PC back everything worked fine until about 3 weeks ago.
I tried 2 x external drives
Ran HBS3 clicked 'Start - it came up with ‘loading’ (see image) then as you can see behind ‘loading’ ‘stopped’ - the loading wheel just kept spinning - no control over the PC had to switch off
When I uninstalled & reinstalled HBS3 - 'clicked HBS3 and it went to
This took about 8 hours and has happened twice.
QNAP are suggesting ‘it looks like tha NAS is running out of memory and causing the Re-synch’ and coming back to me - hopefully today.
The NAS has 4GB RAM and if it is the RAM which is faulty, I would possibly buy 2 x 4GB and try to replace it (them)
My concern is that I do not know - if I remove the 2 hard drives, if I can replace memory with 2 cards and just put the 2 hard drives back and switch on, or there will be a problem?
I would probably be happier just buying a new 2 bay NAS with 8GB RAM and hopefully putting same 2 disks in…
