I need to temporarily house my vinyl collection (of which I can’t really speak to numbers of records - maybe less than 500) and wondering if anyone has a view on the unitary capacity of the Really Useful Boxes. Specifically, I see the 35L XL and 19L XL ones frequently used for storage.
Just trying to get a feel for which ones I should get depending on how many records one can stuff into each
Much appreciated, but a number of records would be more helpful! But I did Google some more - reading 100 LPs for the 35L version and 50 for the 19L. Seems to me that these would have held more - in any event, think I order 3 35L and go from there.
I like that. And now we have a reference - Sainsbury bag = 40 LPs. If I were still in the UK, I’d load up on those just for transport. I need the RUB though because they seal tightly and need to keep the elements out - records temporarily headed to attic, basement storage, or garage for a few months.
All of this strikes me as rather make shift. Per Madsen designed oak LP and CD storage units that were stackable. The first part was the base on wheels with the storage units stacking on the base via pegs . We have many in our living room and they have lasted 20-30 years. They were designed to be shipped flat and were easily assembled. I think he passed but two companies seemed to have taken over the patents. Google Per Madsen Design record Storage. Warning! The stuff is expensive but you get what you pay for. I am assuming the replacement stuff is equivalent quality. I have had several discussions with Ryan who heads up one effort. Unfortunately he does not produce a 90 CD storage unit at this time. Our original CD units stored 99 CDs, so if we wanted to expand by stacking, Ryan’s new units won’t work. Currently we are storing about 1600 LPs and about 400 CDs give or take.
Good advice here - I did just that (measuring the internal dimension of an IKEA Kallax cube where the LPs are currently living.) 34cm, so that RUB will hold effectively whatever’s in the cube, give or take. Rethinking what @PHC12 said - weight may be the bigger issue. Not sure I want to lug 23kgs around in a bigger box. May be best to start small and work from there
As per @Skeptikal I also use and recommend Really Useful Boxes, I’ve used both 35L XL and the 19L version too. If you go for the 19L XL boxes, then they are that bit easier to heave about, especially if lifting them over your head into the loft (as I had to do). They were great when I had to put all my records in storage when had building work done last year. The clip on lids are a great way of allowing stacking of the boxes too.
I have several 35XL boxes and would suggest you can get 50 LPs in comfortably.
However I have most of my LPs in heavy PVC covers so that means you can fit less in.
Without covers possibly 60-70.
These are very heavy when fully loaded!
I recently had to move out of my flat in London, and have had to put all my vinyl LPs in storage. According to the removal man, my collection weighs 1.8 tons!
Whilst we’re on the Really Useful boxes subject, I use the 22l (25.2x15.5x80cm) for Blu Ray/4k/dvd. They fit perfectly and stack. They were cheapest from Viking-Direct.
