Thanks for the insight, and as a keen punter at the time they did add a bit of substance, I remember carefully cutting out some of the artwork, only to bin it at a later date of course!

you are right vinyl makes you get off the armchair. what i do is change my cd after
30 minutes. is better than sitting for over one hour. i have to do this because of
mobility issues i have to keep moving. my physio said it is a good idea.

cds are easy to hide when you arrive home. it is hard to hide vinyl. especially large
box sets.

I just have this picture in my memory from visiting there of acres upon acres of CDs. A place where you could quite easily spend a whole day working from A to Z.

So glad I was born in the early 60’s (and to have travelled the world with my job throught the 80’s and 90’s) to have experienced all that was great about music buying in those times was a privilege.

Rapture in Witney, West Oxfordshire.
Great staff, a very nice selection of second hand vinyl as well as new.
The did start selling Sonos and budget turntables, but are moving more up market on the hardware side.
Chatting with one of the guys a couple of weeks ago, they also said that they will be focusing on second hand hi-fi gear as well.

Just used Diverse Vinyl for the first time after reading this. Really excellent personalised service. Thank you

I have been using Analogue October Records who are in South Street, Chichester, West Sussex. They have a good range of new vinyl records and the shop is well laid out. I have bought several records from them over the years and have found the staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. They also have an online store. I feel its important to support these smaller independent retailers in these difficult times.

I would recommend Hundred Records in Romsey, Hampshire. They have a great selection of cds and vinyl both new and back-catalogue. The owner is very knowledgeable and often arranges in-store events with appearances by musicians in different genres. Unfortunately this hasn’t been possible since COVID came along.

And recommendations for Brighton? Going there this week. Discogs shows plenty, but recent experience of using discogs (in Sheffield) showed it to be well out of date. Bit irritated to walk to a record shop that was long since closed. But equally found a great one that was not on discogs. Shame their prices were more than I wanted to pay. Ironically he blamed discogs for his prices!

@Thegreatroberto My info is a little compromised by time (was a Brighton student in the late 80s / early 90s) but the North Lanes, Trafalgar Street area near the station were the prime locations for secondhand record shops.

The Record Album and Wax Factor were the ones I remember most fondly as having great stock, inc rare and collectible original pressings (got most of my Bowie orange labels from these shops) so I’d head to them first. But, there are bound to be fresh new stores, so hopefully a Brighton resident or someone who visits for crate diving will chime in. A good article here on ‘Swap Records’ for extra info - looks like some have closed too…

Thanks. Good link that. A number of these shops come and go, and whilst I live in Kent , Brighton is not somewhere we go that much. PITA to get to. Via m25 is the quickest way.
I bought a fair amount of decent vinyl for about £2 a go in Brighton 15 years or so ago. Of course those days are long gone.
I want to plan my way around to make best use of the time. That link is a great start.

If arriving by train, don’t forget The Record Album - which is just up the hill from the station

It’ll be car this time. Assuming there is fuel! But yes, starting to see quite a few near the station.

Play It Again, Arbery Arcade, Wantage.
All pre-owned but Mike the owner will give honest info on quality.
Good prices and some good collectors items.
Small shop but jammed with vinyl.

For new vinyl (some used/on offer too) I can recommend Resident. Across The Tracks and Wax Factor are both decent but have rather capricious and not always accurate gradings. But there are bargains to be had in both.

Another vote for The record Album. Beware – old George only takes cash though! Excellent for soundtracks.

I tend to usually go armed with cash in record shops. It’s one of the few reasons for carrying cash now. And it usually attracts a discount too.

Always good to walk past the shop and see what soundtrack albums are in the window display. Invariably they are the films on TV that week.

Didn’t know he was cash only: swimming against the tide

I have to give a big thumbs up to Missing, in Glasgow. A used cd and record shop with an extensive range of albums at nice prices. Staff are friendly and very helpful.

Also very worthwhile visiting is Fopp, just the other side of central station. Again, friendly and very helpful staff.

That does look a great store! It’s on the ‘must visit list’ for when we next have a few days up there. Hopefully there’s a clothes shop or cafe nearby for my better half!
