Rega P8 to P10 - what to expect?

Lol. It is a compulsion isn’t it for some of us. I have been waiting to collect an lp12 I bought a little while ago. It is now in place and already I am wondering about arm, arm board and keel upgrades. That might be normal but I have been here before with the Linn and I vowed that I would just like a ‘simple’ one for old times sake. :slightly_smiling_face:

No criticism was intended, and I can only agree that most of us are in danger of listening to the hi-fi instead of the music. The only question may simply be why this affects turntable buyers much more than (say) streamer buyers.

I am also not suggesting that I am immune - how could I be as an LP12 owner? Depending on what counts (cartridges? phono stages?), I have been through at least 3 rounds of LP12 upgrades since 1994.
Of course, before 1994, I had a RP3. Instead of starting the LP12 path, I could have upgraded to RP6, then RP8, then got an Aria, then got an RP10…

The P8 was my first turntable in 30 years . . . and I upgraded to the P10 about 2 years later. I was very happy with that upgrade. And with the Rega tables sitting atop Fraim, on what the Brits call a “suspended” wooden floor, I never had a single foot traffic issue.

I do enjoy the presentation of the Solstice more than the Regas, having owned the Solstice for 2+ years now. In comparison, the Regas were more “analytical” in presentation. With the Solstice, even with the supplied phono stage, I found the presentation more rounded, more musical vs. analytical, and more ND555-like in presentation style. I dont think that the Solstice gives up any detail to the Regas, it just provides the details in a different presentation. I’m pretty sure I prefer that style of presentation. All that said the P10 is a fine tt and to me a particularly good value, as is the P8 certainly.

I don’t understand - aren’t there any number of threads about optimising streaming setups? Some of which also apply to TT setups, but many unique to streaming. Power cables, power supplies, audio interconnects, network cables, network switches & routers, local storage solutions, ripping software, ripping hardware, streaming providers, streaming control software, streamer firmware… I think that’s the list - apologies for any omissions

Are you differentiating the above from the turntable equivalent of swapping tonearm, power supply and arm lead that the P10 makes a bit tricky?

Sorry. My only point is that some here avoid turntables like LO12s or the Vertere that @frenchrooster mentions, and give the specific reason for NOT buying being the existence of an upgrade path.

I have not noticed people taking the same line on other products, but am happy to be corrected if I am wrong again.

Ah, got it, my apology!

And to the OP for straying off topic X)

I agree that it affects even all the components. But at least I know I am done with the turntable.
The other thing to consider is the easy upgrade possible for the turntable. It’s more straightforward for a turntable ( just swap the ps, the new cable…) and you even do it blindly as it’s recommended by the brand itself.
Those like you who have a Lp12 know it better.

Thank you Bart. I, too, slightly prefer the more rounded presentation of my LP12 over my P8 but practical (and aesthetical) considerations mean that I won’t be putting up a wall shelf for the next couple of years, and the LP12 is hypersensitive to foot traffic on my wooden floor. With my P8 I can literally stump next to it and it keeps tracking whereas my LP12 gives up after a normal step or two. Rega clearly got something right with their extreme lightweight design.

There’s a titanium rega tonearm coming this fall…:slightly_smiling_face:

I agree with your analysis, I was always under the impression that rega arms didn’t love any carts more than 10g weight.
I think that good match with rega arms are Hana (my setup), zyx and rega of course.
I know that you have enormous experience in this area and I think that if you want a dyna shine you have to look to vertere, thales, tw acustic etc

You can add Van den Hull carts and Lyra Delos and Kleos ( 8,8 gr).

I didn’t because honestly I don’t know them

What phono stage did you use. Only asking as interested in Aria compared to Aura.

Rega Aura to get comparable conditions between the turntables.

So I decided to get the P10 and I’m glad I did. Another veil has clearly been lifted and music just sounds more real. Dynamics and detail level have improved too, as has texture. Not sure whether the (Apheta 3) cantilever suspension needs breaking in, but things might even improve further (?) In any event, happy with the improvements I’m hearing so far and enjoying plowing through my record collection.

Interesting to read. I spent a while comparing 1200G with Michell Gyrodec SE and Origin Live Aurora. All excellent decks. I changed my mind a lot! In the end I also came down in favour of the Technics, I might also attribute that to listening mostly to electronic music (though thanks to this forum my tastes have broadened significantly of late!) which seemed to suit the Technics. Even if the latest models are substantially changed over their predecessors, to which I sweated away many hours of my youth in clubs listening to, I can only assume there’s “something” about it that suits the music I like. Or I like the way they make the music I like sound. Or both 8)
