Dan actually i cannot take credit. This is the method that Josquin uses for his Rels. Both of you connect the subs to the speakers.
I connect my single sub to the amp using Bassline Blue for Naim cable.
Hope Josquin’s method works for you.

It’s only the introduction of the LFE cable that has introduced the hum. The high level connection alone there is no hum. The issue is LFE cable sounds so good on HT with only slight hum I like it alot. Works great with high level connection combined with LFE.
These things are never straightforward. Lol. ![]()
Currently watching Black Rabbit on Netflix in Dolby Atmos and sounds very very good.
Brilliant, Jason Bateman is excellent, superb series.
Enjoy Black Rabbit. I finished it two days ago. The first episodes are a bit slow but then it becomes much more enjoyable.
Preferred Ozark however, by the same guy .
Binge watching it in a day! Very enthralling gents!
Listening to LP12 now and the soundstage with the Rel’s just transforms the system. It’s wider, more extended with more expansive sound.
Going back in time I never even considered sub woofers as being an improvement on my hifi system. And with Sopra 2s which are incrediblly capable even less so. But I was wrong.
Now with 2 x S812s I would encourage the upgrade above many others such as cables or additional PSs, or changing speakers!
It really is that good. And so it should be at the significant cost at RRP. The S850s will better still and so on. But these Rel’s have lifted my system and make me happy!

Oh yes: I do agree! A REL stereo pair in my system has been really transformative. I loved music through the system before. Were the RELs necessary? Not really. But I do feel even more connected to music and to the musicians making the music now more than ever.
Hi Dan,
Your thread combined with the current REL sales for the out going models really made me re-evaluate my hifi and av systems.
For about the last 20 years I have had a Velodyne SPL-R1200 in my AV System using the LFE output from my AV Amp for predominantly movies but also 5.1 music from DVDs and Blu-rays and excellent it has been.
However, the Velodyne only allows one connection at a time so you set it up for movies or music but not both.
With the RELs you can connect up to use both movies and music and your thread has prompted this upgrade for me.
Went to the REL dealer and ran my Focal Electra 1038 BEs through the REL subwoofer configurator and for the large room I have it came up with, for the out-going models, two S510s or one S812.
In my main family room I have no space on my right hand main speaker side to take a subwoofer as it would be hard up against the side of a three seater couch that cant be moved, so, as currently the REL dealer recommended the one subwoofer next to the main left hand speaker, which has worked perfectly in that position for movies for the last twenty years.
Only being able to be going for the one subwoofer, I pushed the boat out and decided to get the REL Carbon Special to maximise the benefit of the one subwoofer.
It should arrive at the end of next week, so hopefully can hook it all up next weekend.
Im really excited that Im now able to optimise my stereo music set up with the REL as well as the home theatre and I appreciate your thread which encouraged me to look into it all and come up with a great improvement - thank you very much.
Amazing news MoonDrifter,
I look forward to hearing how you get on with the Rel Carbon Special. You have really gone for it! I believe @mech might go for one also!
Yes I am planning just to get 1 in the coming weeks. Dan’s experience is a delight and push me to want to get it done also.
Recently I saw a YouTube where Mark Levinson released the Anton speaker where he mention “bass is the foundation of the music”. This, combined with me still not being satisfied with my Focal and 500 series prompted me to try subwoofer. Your experience that sub beats any tweak on cables or rack etc. makes me just want to try out even more.
The sub might be the key here..
Update on slight hum with the LFE cables in place for S812s home theatre duties.
It’s not even a hum. So on the mains block I took everything out and added each plug in from Server, Sky Box, AV amp and UHD player. One by one the slight noise increased ever so slightly.
Overall it’s more like an air noise. Very very slight and not a hum as such.
Nothing to worry about and I am not noticing it. Watching Rel videos and they say take a wire from AV amp ground chassis to ring of LFE input. Sounds like a faff to me!
There is a Rel video or document that advocates just about every single grounding scheme ever witnessed on planet earth. Unfortunately grounding issues are frequently encountered and to Rel’s credit they provide a variety of things to try to get rid of it.
On my olive 72 i had to ground at the phono screw to get rid of the hum. The standard attachment to the amp terminals had hum.
On my 332 it is the opposite. When i ground to the phono screw on the nvc-tt i get hum. When i ground to the olive 250 as per standard Bassline Blue for Naim instructions there is no hum whatsoever.
You just need to keep trying things. Most of the users eventually find the solution for their system.
Without the LFE there is no hum. I’ll get some wire and try grounding to the AV amp using chassis ground. I even have a ground on my Puritan 156!
There are sometimes really weird things with hum. On my 332 system when i grounded to the nvc-tt i had hum…but only on the turntable. No hum at all on the dac. Here’s where it gets really weird. When i unplugged the dac din from the 332 i had no hum on the phono. Yeah…really strange.
As i said i fixed it by grounding at the amp…which is the standard Rel grounding scheme when you attach to the amp instead of the speakers.
I am not suprised you have a weird thing going with hum only in one configuration. These things can get strange.
I’m using two Rel TX/9 subs with my ProAc D2R speakers and a Supernait 3. Only way to get rid of my hum was connecting subs to back of speakers. Fast forward, bought a new Rega ND7 cartridge this week and now horrible hum while using the turntable that slowly builds. Hit mute on off quickly hum stops then builds again. Had the subs positioned just outside both speakers. Moved them away maybe 10 inches from the speakers and the hum went away. Not sure if it’s the Rel subs or the way Naim builds their gear or both but solving the hum issues with these things is a bit tedious.
“Solving hum issues with these things is a bit tedious”
Well said. Hum drives me nuts even if i can’t hear it when playing music. Good news is trying different methods that Rel suggests have led to a solution with both the old 72 and new 332 so all ends well.
Hi Dan, I can only imagine how good the subwoofers sound on your system. I wish I could hear them. What are you crossing them over at? I recently had the urge to get some high end subs so I got back into DIY and I’m just testing out my newly built scan-speak revelator 13” sub. I have one built and working on the second. Considering the success I had with the sound quality of my homemade speakers I built 10 years ago I figured I might as well build the matching subs. I have some new found respect for how good these old scan-speak speakers sound. They might even be better then my PMC twenty5 24i. The new sub is very impressive as well. They blend together very well. My main speakers are sealed 2.5 way with a very flat frequency response down to 50hz, so I have the low pass on the subs at 60hz. I cannot wait to get the second one hooked up.
Cost wise it would have been cheaper for me to get the REL’s but then I’d always be wondering about the scan-speaks.
It wasn’t until after I bought the sub amps though that I read that Naim doesn’t recommend using the RCA preout at the same time as the balanced output on the NAC 332 due to reduced sound quantity. My 1000W sub amps have only balanced inputs and RCA, no speaker level input. I’m using the RCA pre-out so hopefully I’m not sacrificing sound quality too much. I’ll try not to worry about that too much as it sounds pretty darn good.
Nice job, your speakers kind of remind me of Dynaudio I once owned, is that what you based them on?
Yes, the Dynaudio Focus speakers are a very similar shape. The sides are tapered towards the back of the speakers. They are a very warm, detailed snd smooth sounding speaker and the Naim amps add the right amount of excitement to them. The PMC’s can be a bit to much on some songs in comparison especially with female vocals sounding somewhat artificially bright in comparison.
These same Scan-speaks are used in Wilson Audio speakers.
