Very sad to see this news. An absolute giant in jazz - who was an essential part of the famous and unique Keith Jarrett Trio. People always rave about Keith, but the trio only worked magic as it did with all three of them….
Will definitely play some music today to honor him.
Sad news indeed. Jack Dejohnette was a giant!
He will be missed. Rip
An excellent musician who contributed so much. Thank you JD and RIP.
Very sad to hear, read this while playing “Always Let Me Go (live in Tokyo” RIP

‘Nardis’ features my favourite solo drum work.

DeJohnette, Grenadier, Medeski & Scofield - Hudson
This is very sad to hear. Only last night I was listening to some of his brilliant early work with Jackie McLean on ‘Jacknife” and pondering that he was one of just a couple of living artists on that recording. RIP.
Saw him a few times - with Surman and the ‘Trio Beyond’ group. Always good.
He kept the beat for a truck load of great jazz artists.
Very sad news, wished him a happy birthday only two months ago …on the what are you listening to thread… ![]()
In memoriam enjoying these two contrasting recordings - power and delicacy. What a player. Saw the trio at the San Sebastian Jazz Fest in 2005 - utterly memorable.
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
Really sad news. I have so many albums with this great drummer playing.
The giants of Jazz that I grew up with are slowly disappearing.
“so many” is right! All those great Davis recordings – Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, etc. The Gateway recordings with Holland & Abercrombie, Evans, Rollins, Metheny, Lloyd, and of course, all the Jarrett/Peacock/DeJohnette trio albums.
Worth mentioning that DeJohnette was quite a good pianist as well…RIP!
The below ECM recording is from October 2015 with Matt & Ravi (sons of Jimmy G. & JC).
Spot on - he was an excellent pianist, much more than just a brilliant drummer. Fine composer too.
Sad news. RIP.
RIP Jack.
His drumming has brought me much delight over the years.
@frenchrooster- I remember you saying years ago that you had an enormous respect for Jack’s masterful ease of playing.
I listen to the Keith Jarrett Trio almost every day, and most mostly that means Jack was in the drum stool (although in some periods that meant Paul Motian).
What a fabulous life Jack lived!
Especially that early formative period with Keith Jarrett and Miles Davis in the late 60s and early 70s.
Here is a video of Jack and Keith in the Charles Lloyd band even earlier:
