Just awful.
Roger W Smith made his own watch and showed it to Daniels. It took a couple of tries, but Daniels eventually said he was good enough to help and be his apprentice! He builds watches that are six figures and are absolutely beautiful.
-edit - just seen that Roger’s pocket watch No.2 that got him the job was sold at auction in New York for 4,900,000 USD earlier this year. I would imagine the price of any of his extant watches went up a little in value that evening.
The simple ones are the ones I like most.
Grand Seiko Spring Drive or, even better, Credor (also owned by Seiko)
Amazing timepieces beating Rolex at their own game.
Grand Seiko recently opened a boutique in New Bond Street (their first in the UK). Only go in without a credit card. Jaw dropping stuff in there!
I ordered some days ago the Tommy Hilfiger with red silicone bracelet .
Not the Rolex level of course. But I need a watch recently and that one is reasonably priced and looks nice to me.
Just looked up Credor, blimey!!
Has he got the back on his front I wonder?

Next purchase of a watch from myself will be an Omega De Ville.
Classy lines, less height than Rolex, neater and more discreet on the wrist.

Agreed on the Aqua Terra. I love mine If Rolex equates to A BMW, Omega is more Audi
For me, a first luxury watch has to be a Rolex, and getting noticed is surely one of the reason for buying a watch in this category. And a Datejust is probably the most iconic.
IWC, Omega or Grand Seiko etc would be watch # 2.
Why would anyone want their watch to be noticed by others? This is the very thing that puts some people off Rolex (that and size/brashness). On quite a number of occasions I have come across people flaunting the monstrosity on their wrist - all it does to me is make me dismiss the person as a someone without substance, who places their own perceived image above other values. That said, the funniest thing of all has been salesmen flashing their Rolexes (not come across a saleswoman doing it), that telling me they make a lot of commission so the product is clearly overpriced - they never made a sale.
The bottom line here is to simply buy which watch you like, Rolex or otherwise. Rolex is a unique brand which seems to divide opinion. A key differentiator is that a Rolex will (typically) appreciate in value, whereas an Aqua Terra, for example, will depreciate in value.
This alone, isn’t the only reason to buy a watch. I’m lucky enough own two Rolexes and watches by other brands, and I enjoy and cherish them all equally.
Been an owner of several, currently two. Short advice, do your homework and figure out exactly what you want, in my case 39 perpetual and an explorer 1. One new, one through a reputable dealer in Germany. Check Chrono24 website. Interesting to note, used prices, eg premium, prices are the softest since May 2021 and could go lower. Maybe the flippers are getting out of the market.
Or go AD and wait, can be 24 months for a “basic” model. I mentioned before somewhere, i have dealt with a small AD dealer in Mannheim to get my wifes fixed, was overdue for a service as it was running slow, they have a back order of about 8-900 at anytime.
Happy hunting and good look.
About to purchase my 1st Rolex, a blue faced fluted Datejust 41 on jubilee bracelet ref 126334. Struggling to get my head around the inability to walk into a boutique and buy one from an AD. Looks like I will be paying £3.5k over list for a 2023 unworn full set from a reseller / flipper.
Seriousley considered Omega Globemaster but know if I go Omega will only buy the Rolex anyway and dont need both. Alternative would be to buy the Omega and wait for Rolex AD to deem me worthy then sell the Omega. Might even work out cheaper???
Yes I bought mine very lightly used and had it serviced and still in credit if i were to sell.
I think that may prove in hindsight £3.5k down the drain, unless this is a ‘keeper’ once in a lifetime ambition. I could very well be wrong but I have noticed a significant swing in car supply prices/ overs in models such as Porsche 992 Turbo S which have dropped a very significant amount (£50k+). Cars have been exacerbated by component availability post Covid and impact of Ukraine but I suspect there is a larger cloud hanging over luxury/ non essential items including watches which is a function of the current economic malaise, interest rates, cost of living, etc. I suspect the market will undergo a correction which could prove costly for those paying overs who like to rotate their collections and assume no depreciation. There will always be an elite who sit above the crowd and remain relatively immune to such factors however, they are the exception. Your money etc…

The Omega looks better.
