Rolex - which one?

You might be right… still derliberating

Equally, I do intend to keep long-term (but plans change…)

That was a new one on me also. Seems to cover a huge range from quartz to bespoke mechanical watches targeting simple and perfectly formed - at a price!

In your opinion (beauty in eyebof the beholder). When on the wrist the Rolex was nicer to me. Tried both in Marsielle yesterday, is Rolex twice as good, no, but it will cost nearly twice as much if I go grey, decisions, decisions.

I seriously would not do that. Especially for a Datejust. Your money has simply gone down the drain. Just wait a little at the moment, certain models (steel/gold) are dropping to list or below for basically brand new on the main sites. I do believe in another 6 months it may be better still.

I’m just trying to help/protect you from that type of purchase when it’s not really beneficial to you.

It only took me 6 months from a reputable AD to get a Datejust. No problem waiting, and of course it’s a beautiful watch and no BS with the inflated grey market shenanigans.

At the end of the day, you should buy what you really want. It’s your choice, you’re money and you will be happy so these are the important things.

Many different brands out there with fantastic and interesting history/heritage. However, don’t let the detractors fool you, Rolex make beautiful watches, the finishing is second to none as is their quality and performance.

Good luck and enjoy the journey

Stu, I always fancied the Air King or the original Explorer.

Miscalculated, switching between USD, EUR and GBP while on a cruise, its not £3.5k over but more like £1.8k

I will reach out to my local AD when I get home (got a friend who has about £400k of watches so he might even get me one if I twist his arm)

Contacts are the key in this game!
Also, right place, right time very useful too when it happens  :joy:
But seriously, knowing the right people really helps.
I’ve never paid over list for any timepiece. Some almost half price.
I’d probably only do it for something really special and meaning something to me but not likely to happen.
Enjoy :+1:

You might want to read this article before making a purchase. I found it through Apple News, but it’s an article in the Independent.

You could always go for something stylish, something from the 40/50/60s.

Some watches from this era are are a work of art.

Unlike most modern Rolex.

People don’t believe me when I tell them they can’t walk into a Rolex boutique and simple buy a watch.
There are a selection usually of not prime models and lots of empty cases.
Weird world :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

A 500 series one. Just make sure it has the DR upgrade though

I only wear mine around the house and never at swingers events.

I agree. Both of these watches are superb, and an authorised Rolex dealer should be able to get you an Oyster Perpetual in 4-6 months, probably a little longer for a Datejust. Waiting times do vary depending on what colour dial and for the datejust also on bracelet and bezel. Dealers like to play a game where some encourage you to buy other items whilst hinting that will help you secure your Rolex quicker.

Some new/year old Rolex models are now available through gray dealers at less than RRP - and it’s been many years since this was the case. If it carries on like this we may even return to the days when you could just walk in and buy some Rolex models right away.

I just picked up an oyster Perpetual which I love the simplicity of - had to wait 4 months

Anyone who buys a watch in order to get noticed must surely have issues. Maybe they need their self esteem boosted, or maybe they are simply an ostentatious wan…

The key to minimising risk is not to put your valuables/wealth on show, especially when out and about.

LOL, yes, I broke my golden rule of not posting after a night out.

There are watches I’d never wear for the reasons you mention, most Breitlings anything with diamonds etc. However if someone noticed I was wearing an iconic aspirational watch like the Datejust I was discussing then I would take pleasure from that.

Would add that if you have always liked the look of the Datejust- then ask your local Rolex dealer to put you on the list - they should be able to give you an idea which dial colours are most likely to arrive in the shortest possible time
It is undoubtedly a great watch, and is unlikely to lose much in terms of future resale price - and may even give you a premium if you sold it in the future.
This is an added appeal of a Rolex, there are few watch brands that hold their price so well - and the others are much harder to get and cost a lot lot more.

If any of these, then probably the former in my case.

or have a bigger weapon than the thief!!

I don’t know if you’ve seen that DJ in the metal. It’s really very, very shiny indeed. My three decent watches are all on straps, which to me is much more understated. It was another reason to move away from Rolex. Both my Explorer and Milgauss looked and wore so much better on the bracelet, but their obviousness made me self conscious. But then I wore them as everyday watches, out shopping, on country walks etc. If someone is only wearing them for going out, it’s far less of an issue.
