The key is having folded washing stacked at a variety of heights, rather than at a consistent height, and covering the entire table surface.

Towels on a rack are excellent at attenuating bass. Socks are better suited to handling mid-range and smalls are most effective at promoting treble, especially if they are a size too small.

than perhaps IBLs, SBLs or SL2s might be the way to go, or Audionote UK make speakers intended for use in corners (not sure you can get these in NZ). Maybe some others too, how would Shahinian ELFs fare?

Somewhat randomly (and very unusually thee are both SL2 aSBL and some Shaihinan on sale used here.

Cheers, yep the speakers are rear ported. Some things to have a look at anyway…

You might try the speakers against the stairwell too. Maybe against the solid wall even; that would (I think) make the room symmetrical.

You could try hanging a couple of thick duvets over the stairwell wall too. Might kill any flutter echos.
